[rawfeeding] DO I NEED TO ADD BONE OR MORE ORGAN?

Howdy everyone.
My 11 yr tabby indoor cat has been on raw for about 2wks. She got tired
of chicken so I added pork country style rib in chunks as she doesnt do
bones yet. Prob today is (trying to be tactful) she is dragging her
tush on white carpet. Yes my white carpet in my bedroom where she
stays. Going to get laminated wood when we have the money.

She would do this before with kibble and I would give canned pumpkin.
Confused as if she needs more fiber or from gizzard she ate? No big d
just dragging. Not anal gland prob. Any good ideas welcomed. Give more
bone? liver?

Have a great weekend everyone. Ciao ciao

Hi Alan,

I'm from South Australia, too, but am relatively new to this list. I
wonder if there are any other South Australian raw feeders? It'd be
great for us to share our meaty sources. :)

Perhaps any hiding South Australians should announce themselves
privately. :)

I would say if you switch to raw feeding, which you should, keep
using the same treats you are using now if they are working for
you. Treats make up such a small amount of the diet as to be
inconsequential.

Like you said, they should be a quick eat. Clicker training the
right way consists of feeding a treat every 3 or 4 seconds. The dog
has to eat the treat, swallow it, complete the next task and be
ready for the next treat in that amount of time.

Personally, I use Authority Little Liver treats from Petsmart. They
are basically a soft kibble. Each kibble size chunk makes about 20
to 25 treats for me.

[rawfeeding] Re: Bad Vomit/ Need help

Pauline, is she still acting ok? It could very well be the new fish.
I remember the first time I gave Geiger a whole fish. . .I bought a
monkfish at an ethnic market I found and he was sooo excited to eat
it. I planned on just giving him a little bit, but he seemed to like
it so much, I let him eat the whole thing. The rest of the evening
went fine, he was playing and acting just like normal. But then, at
about 11pm I hear the dreaded "gurka gurka" noise. The fish
was "returned to sender" all over my *brand new* comfortor (as in,
purchased that day). I've never smelled anything so terrible in my
life. But, after getting the fish out, Geiger was fine. I was too
scarred by the incident to ever feed monkfish again, but I did learn
to introduce new fishes slowly. It could have been a bad fish, it
could have been too much fish, I'm not sure. But it hasn't happened
since.

I hope your girl is ok this morning and I hope the vomit did not end
up on your bed. Let us know how she is.

Cathy, no because I pick up all of hers and her poop is dry mostly and
very small. What came out of her was brown and smelly. Her poop is not
smelly anymore.

But the day before she did have brown poop from something new she had.
I picked it up, but maybe she could have gone again and I didn't know.
Lately though she isn't eating her poop???

[rawfeeding] Re: Freecycle for old meat

I get freezer burnt meat from Freecycle. It has been a wonderful
experience. Good quality meat, and not rotten, just thawed and
refrozen. My dog ate venison and the best steak. He would never get it
otherwise, too expensive.

[rawfeeding] kelp for my dog

How much kelp should I give my dog and at what mg. I have been reading
where it says 1 teaspoon per day per 20 lb of dog but it does not say
at what mg and I have noticed that you can buy kelp at different mg.
Hopefully someone can answer me... appreciate it. thanks Janet

[rawfeeding] Re: Help...not going so well

Hmm...In only a week you have a whole lot of variety in there! That
might be your problem.

> They get feed twice a day RMB in the morning and muscle meat at
> night ...

You might consider feeding just once a day or maybe a bone in meal
for both feedings. Your dogs just might not be able to handle a
meaty meat meal yet.

> some snacks like a marrow bone to chew on during the day or maybe
> a pork shoulder.

Woah, a pork shoulder for a snack? I don't think your pups need a
big snack in addition to two meals a day. BTW, marrow bones are
really dense and can cause tooth breakage, I'd stay away from them.

> So yesterday they had chicken quarters and turkey necks for
> breakfast and for dinner consumed beef tongue. My girl had a beef
> neck bone for snack and the boy the pork shoulder.

For dogs a week into raw feeding, this is probably wayy too much
variety, and depending on the size of dogs, probably way too much
food.

> This morning I woke up to a pile of soft stool at the front door
> of the bedroom (as if he couldn't hold it)

Probably from too much food.

> and two piles of puke in the bathroom. Then as the morning
> progressed he puked 5 more times -looked like a lot of bone pieces
> in the vomit.

This is a natural reaction to an irritated stomach. Did your boy
partake in the beef neck bone, or eat the bone from the pork
shoulder? That probably would have done it.

> He also had explosive diarrhea outside. He seems to be lethargic
> and not interested in anything...yesterdy he was just fine.

He is probably really uncomfortable right now. Is he drinking water
ok? If the liquid poo has stopped and he's holding down water I
would fast him for a day and start again with a much more basic
menu. When my dogs eat something that doesn't agree with them, they
generally laze about for a day, giving me sad eyes.

> Next, we have a new puppy who is also on raw...
> So last night she
> got chicken necks with no skin or fat that I could see and she
> wouldn't eat in the morning but got two meals once she would eat.

She might not have been hungry in the morning. How big is she and
what breed?

> She still has very soft to liquid stool.

You mentioned that you suspected parasites, have you taken care of
them? It can take a while for the poo to get back to normal. You
also might be feeding her too much in one sitting.

> Maybe starting from the beginning and going back to just chicken
> quarters and chicken breast...any suggestions??

I think going back to basics is a great idea. Go back to just
chicken. Get whole ones, whack them up, and feed through them. Let
everyone's digestive system get used to it before adding variety.
You'll probably want to fast your boy for a day to give his system
time to reset. I know it is hard to hold back on variety at first,
but you guys have a lifetime to explore new foods. Take it easy for
now.

Good luck!
Andrea

I KNOW that kind of vomit. My female boxer has a very sensitive
stomach and if something unsettles her she'll vomit a heap of FOUL
smelling food. It is my opinion that when her stomach gets upset
(stress or unusual food item) it just stops emptying and everything
sits there for a few hours and deteriorates until she throws it up.

Had to say for sure if it was the mackerel but I would consider waiting
a bit before trying that again.

[rawfeeding] Rabbits from China

Make sure any rabbit meat is not from rabbits from China. It won't
hurt your
dogs any, but there is a virus that is very lethal to rabbits and is
easily
spread by even frozen imported rabbits.

After seeing the post about feeding anything from China, I checked the
archives and found this post from August, 2005. Does anyone have
updated info about rabbit imported from China. I have googled and
can't find a thing to indicate a concern why it can not be fed to my
pups.

[rawfeeding] Re: Formally, Concerning beef bones now grains and glands

We show our great danes and if the show is too far away and requires us
spending the night away from the house we pack what we need in a cooler of ice or
buy fresh in the town we are at.

I pack meat in plastic ziploc bags and freeze them anyway so its really easy
to pull out the weight amount I need for each day depending on how many of
the kids are going with me. Its also nice to have a nice cold chicken back,
pork neck or even turkey breast to keep them busy and cool them off in the
summer.

[rawfeeding] Questions about raw

Hello all. New to this so bare with me. I have a min schnauzer that
has been on completely raw diet since 5-1-07. She is doing great and
loves it. I feed her chicken and veggy medallions and also chicken
wings. We tried buffalo once and it was a bit too rich for her
tummy. How important is variety? I don't want her to get bored but
I'm not sure what else to feed her. I read a lot of the books, but
for this breed in particular is there a limit? Looking forward to
learing lots.

[rawfeeding] RE: Aussie in Raw group

I've received a mail back from Jen - thank you Jen :-) but thought I might
put this back on the list as I had no idea there are several Aussies on this
list so that may mean more ideas and perhaps it will help someone else too.
Can I please ask, where do you get the roo mince from? I can only get it
from City Farmers which is a pet shop and it's not human grade. They also
sell a 'kennel mix' but it doesn't list ingredients which bothers me
somewhat. Their chicken mince is minced carcasses (same for chicken pet
mince from Lennards) which I'm not keen on since it is basically mince bone
- is my concern correct? I never know what people mean when they talk about
Chicken Backs. I buy al my chicken from Lennards and can only buy whole
chooks or quarters, necks, wings, legs or carcasses that do have a fair bit
of meat on them but it's basically the chicken, what's left of it after
they've taken the meat off it. Where do buy beef hearts and kidneys? I
don't see them in the supermarket. Probably a stupid question but what are
brisket bones? I can buy beef bones which seem like flat bones (couple of
mills thick) with some meat on it. More like ribs I guess. Or I can buy
beef off cuts that have much more meat on it and some bone or I can buy
marrow bones that have been cut in half longways (the marrow bones give my
dogs the runs tho). Woolworths sells all that. So I basically buy my meat
from Coles, Woolworths and Lennards. I do have a couple of butchers not too
far away that I could approach for off cuts but I don't have a fish shop
other than the supermarkets where they don't have fish off cuts. I can get
lots of Lamb off cuts for about $3.00 a KG - that has lots of meat on it.
How do you feed your dogs liver? My guys won't eat the chicken liver raw
and I haven't tried beef liver yet but have been thinking about half
freezing it and then slicing it really thin. Last question; I also have a 3
month old pup that LOVES raw but when I give her a Lamb off-cut, it takes
her a long time to eat it. Is that ok for a young dog or should I only give
her chicken (she loves the lamb tho) thank you all so much for helping out.

Hi Carla

I'm in Perth, SOR and have been feeding raw for the best part of 4 years. My
current dog is a Maltese, tho' I previously switched a boxer to raw.

I don't pretend to be an expert and haven't anywhere near the experience and
knowledge of most other people on this list, but if you're looking for
someone to share/find resources, by all means contact me.

You have to post a "wanted" - I've never seen anyone think to offer it.
You ask for raw, but you don't necessarily have to say you are feeding
it raw.
You let them know it is for your dogs, and that you feed real meat
because it is a healthy thing to do.
You ask for old meat, freezer-burn meat, and especially meat that their
hunting friends have given them (that they'll never eat).
If you would like my "wording", I don't mind sending it to you off-
list - just e-mail me.

Re: [rawfeeding] Re: Freecycle for old meat

we do a wanted post for freezer burnt meat, or venison or fish. I just say dog has allergies(which he does, hence the raw diet), but alot of times the people ask and then they want more info on raw diet. so far we've gotten 3 freecyclers in our area switched to raw!! We lost our source of meat from these people cause they use it for their dogs now!! Sometimes people will ask if they can eat other things, one guy asked about TV dinners, he had a ton of!!

[rawfeeding] Re: Where to buy the raw meat

--- In rawfeeding@yahoogroups.com, "yolakayak"
<stefanie.reichert@...> wrote:

bones?

Hi Stefanie,
Maybe some of these may be good options for you:

Finding Cheaper Sources of Meat:

1) look up meat and poultry packers, processors, and distributors in
the yellow pages. You may be able to get great prices from them if
you order in bulk, and/or they may have a discount outlet that is
open to the public.
2) I get many of my best deals in Asian/Oriental markets. I've also
heard that Hispanic and Caribbean markets have great variety and
prices too.
3) you may be able to join a barter group.
4) google breeders (i.e. rabbit, goat, lamb, etc.) who are in your
geographic area. They may have culls they want to get rid of, or
lower prices overall.
5) look up bulk suppliers and frozen bulk foods in your yellow pages.
6) if you have a Chinatown nearby, definitely make a visit.
7) let your friends, relatives, and neighbors know you want any
freezer burn or old meat when they clean out their freezers, and tell
them to pass the word along.
8) if you belong to a church or social group, tell those members to
mention it to their friends and relatives as well.
9) see if there are any co-ops or meat buying groups near you. Check
on Yahoo, or google to see.
10) try Craigslist - it's amazing what you can get for free or cheap.
11) and I get meat and fish all the time (for free) through
Freecycle. Join multiple lists if there are a few close by.
12) some Wal-marts and some Costcos and some Sams Clubs have good
deals, but you may want to make sure it's not seasoned meat.
13) definitely watch the the flyers, and you can usually see the rest
of the flyers online (the ones that don't get delivered to your house,
but are only a short drive away).
14) *** hands down, the bulk of my best deals have been marked down
meat at regular grocery stores. They reduce it the day before it is
going to expire, and I go as early as I can to get it before it is
gone.
15) tell friends and relatives who hunt and fish that you want first
dibs on any body parts they don't. You can probably get at least the
organs and maybe the head. Also ask them to put you in touch with
their other friends who hunt and fish.
16) a great tip I learned here a while back - some restaurants throw
out things they don't use, like the organs that come inside whole
poultry, or raw meat that falls on the floor. see if they'll save
them for you. Find somebody who knows somebody who works there.
17) farmer's markets are great, but pick and choose carefully for the
best bargains. and sometimes at the end of the day some vendors will
reduce their prices, cause they don't want to take it back with them.
18) some people contact taxidermists, who have no use for the meat.
19) find people on this list from your vicinity, and ask them where
they get their meat deals. Join other raw feeding lists (there are
many), and look for raw feeders in your area.
20) tell your butcher you want the meat that they would normally
throw out, that is almost out of date, that people ordered and didn't
pick up, stuff that was dropped on the floor, their freezer
cleanouts, and parts that don't sell (like trachea, lungs, spleen,
etc.). Some butchers will save their trim for you (once they get to
know you). Build a relationship with them first.
21) yes, roadkill works too (where it is legal). In some places you
can get your name on the list and get called when they have large
roadkill (like deer)
22) you can raise your own meat/poultry if you have the room
23) post a message in CarnivoreFeed-Supplier or CFS-Canada if you are
in North America:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CarnivoreFeed-Supplier/
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CFS-Canada/
24) speak to local farmers
25) also look for heart, tongue, and gizzards which count as meat (as
opposed to organ) in the world of raw feeding, but are often cheaper
than other muscle meats
26) find somebody who knows somebody who works at the grocery store.
They can introduce you to the meat guy, who may become more willing
to save stuff for you or reduce items about to expire, once they know
you.

[rawfeeding] Re: Freecycle for old meat

Hi Michele,

best you ask the mods of the list first.

Can I suggest you look at options beyond the "freecycle" network.
There are many gifting communities around now, the vast majority that
do not have the commercialisation and income that now freecycle has.

This may sound like a dumb question, but if you buy salmon oil (not in

yes post a "wanted" ad-- I always say RAW MEAT and ask for old or
freezer burn -- and then I list the variety of meats -- I also specify
NO SEASONED OR BREADED items. make sure you say it is for dogs.
I have gotten only one negative response to RAW feeding and that has
really surprised me that I did not get more. I usually advertise once
a month.

[rawfeeding] Freecycle for old meat

I have a question for those of you who have gotten meat this way. Do
you post a "wanted" request or just wait and see if someone offers
it? I'm thinking of posting a request but don't want to get a ton of
emails from people who tell me how bad this is for my dogs.

[rawfeeding] Help...not going so well

Ok So we transitioned the dogs over to raw over a week ago. They get
feed twice a day RMB in the morning and muscle meat at night ...some
snacks like a marrow bone to chew on during the day or maybe a pork
shoulder. I do started feeding organ meat but I cut back on that when
the stools got really loose. So yesterday they had chicken quarters
and turkey necks for breakfast and for dinner consumed beef tongue.
My girl had a beef neck bone for snack and the boy the pork shoulder.
This morning I woke up to a pile of soft stool at the front door of
the bedroom (as if he couldn't hold it) and two piles of puke in the
bathroom. Then as the morning progressed he puked 5 more times
-looked like a lot of bone pieces in the vomit. He also had explosive
diarrhea outside. He seems to be lethargic and not interested in
anything...yesterdy he was just fine. My girl is fine not acting
weird or vomitting..and her stool is fine. A couple of days ago he
was vomitting due to empty stomach (we think considering his yellow
bile AM)
Next, we have a new puppy who is also on raw. We figured her stool
which was mostly gelatinous turned liquid was the parasites and maybe
too much fat in her diet. So last night she got chicken necks with no
skin or fat that I could see and she wouldn't eat in the morning but
got two meals once she would eat. She usually finishes her meals
cause I try to make sure she isn't over eating so I try to feed her
less in one meal and add more meals. She still has very soft to
liquid stool. I need some suggestions....Maybe starting from the
beginning and going back to just chicken quarters and chicken
breast...any suggestions??

Angela

Re: [rawfeeding] Rabbit from China?

Jessie -
I have been buying rabbit and it is a tad costly ($90.00 for a large box which contains 15 nice-sized rabbits) but I noticed when I picked it up from my supplier that it, too, comes from China.

I'm not concerned about the quality of the rabbit because I've been purchasing it and feeding it with no problems at all. I'm on the hunt for some cheap chicken, which I've had trouble finding. So, for the past few weeks it's been mostly beef, pork, and rabbit for me. Sometimes I think we overdo chicken as it is plentiful so I'm not too disturbed with my neglect in feeding it lately.

Good luck with your rawfeeding:)

This evening's meal was Max's 5th raw feeding diet of The Honest
Kitchen (HK) Force mixture and raw extra lean ground beef. I am
following the daily recommendation guideline of 2% body weight which
is about 1 cup of dry to 1.25 cups of water and then about 1/8 cup of
ground beef. His poop following the first three meals were long and
soft but not mushy like it was during his medication treatment for
Giardia. Today, he pooped a total of 5 times! Nice and solid poop,
some where pretty long, 2-3 inches. Is this morning during the
initial transition to raw feeding? My Mom noticed today that one of
his poops did have some pieces of the veggies in the diet so I'm
thinking maybe he's getting too much veggies and I may have to switch
to a diet that has little to no veggies. HK is releasing a formula in
July called Thrive that has no grains or veggies. I am sure Primal
has something comparable that I can look into after I'm done with this
first bag which should last about a month.

Has anyone experienced or heard of this before?

Label says sodium content is 0.2%(.002) so it appears they are dried, not salted, right? Guess I will need to see if they are anchovies but if the drying process eliminates the Omega 3s, I don't see the need.

[rawfeeding] How much liver at once?

Hi guys.

My dog has always had plenty of raw meat and bones, but now we're getting
into the organ thing (since joining the list), and also cutting out our
kibble and can (well,we HAVE cut it out).

Today I bought some liver (not sure what animal, but I think perhaps lamb).
I've been reading on here to introduce it as 'thumbnail' size pieces, and I
today he had this much liver because a lobe that size just happened to fall
off. ;)

I can't remember my dog ever getting diarrhea. I introduced organs as one
lambs kidney about a week ago, and we got no diarrhea. He also regularly has
eggs as a meal, and also hasn't had diarrhea from this.

So how should I go about this liver? How much should I give him at once?
And how much should I be able to give him in one sitting once he is used to
this organ?

For what it's worth, my dog is about 6kgs, a border terrier, 5 years old.

Thanks guys. :)

-Tegan and border terrier MacDogald

[rawfeeding] Re: diarrhea - new dog

Hi Sean,

I have a 20 lb. Boston. He eats about 3/4# per day average. He is
pretty lean and fit--although less active right now due to a knee
injury, so I might have to cut down. Sometimes I feed every day, often
I feed every other day, sometimes I feed every few days. He can eat
anything! Some of his recent meals: A hunk of boneless beef roast,
liver, heart; various cuts of pork and organs (shoulder roast, ribs,
tenderloin, heart, spleen, kidney); lamb shanks, necks, heart, liver,
kidney; whole rabbit; bone-in turkey breast; ground beef, venison, or
turkey in a Kong; a few sardines; goat leg. A lot of meat, a little
bone, and a little organ is the basic idea!

[rawfeeding] Re: Keep Teeth Clean

Hmmmm...I don't know...why not shoot a little higher than the
minimum? :-) What are you feeding? Meat and other tissue on bones
and awkward stuff that they can sink their teeth into and rip and tear
is what you want. For me, that can be a beef or pork roast, a slab of
beef or pork ribs, a hunk of bone-in goat (often a leg), a big pork
neck, lamb necks, lamb shanks...Try one of these parts if you haven't
already and you'll see exactly how the teeth cleaning happens! I feed
these types of things for most meals, but have heard of others doing a
lot of boneless hunks alternating w/bony parts--with the bony parts
being maybe 1-2 meals a week. Hopefully you'll get more answers.

Does that help a bit?

Sean,

there is nothing your JRT should get that should be any different than
my devon rex cat, my ferret, my toy poodle, nor my tribe of Portuguese

They are all carnivores, so they all get the same food. Check out
what my guys eat here, and scroll down to the bottom for the pictures:

[rawfeeding] Re: Lots of Poop During Initial Transition to Raw Feeding?

Goodness me, why are you feeding ground food?

And why are you feeding your carnivore veggies?

cheers,

Jane

[rawfeeding] Keep Teeth Clean

+++++Mod note: you need to sign all emails, otherwise tired mods sometimes delete posts without letting them through (and I'm on my second beer, so that could be soon). ++++++++++

How often and what kind of bones do I need to give to keep the teeth
clean? I have a shiba inu and a chow/shepherd mix. The chow/
shepherd mix I just adopted recently and he has very yellow teeth.
The shiba is only two, whith nice white teeth for the most part, but
I have been slacking with the raw, so I need to know the minimum to
keep healthy teeth so I can stay on track better.

Thanks.

[rawfeeding] Lots of Poop During Initial Transition to Raw Feeding?

Thank you,
Sean

[rawfeeding] Re: diarrhea - new dog

During the check-up, did they do a fecal float? My 16-month old
JRT-mix was recently diagnosed with Giardia and was on Flagyl for
about 10 days. I recently moved to raw feeding through the use of The
Honest Kitchen Force and some extra lean ground beef. His poop is now
solid and his activity levels are back to normal prior to medication
and Giardia. I have yet to take in another fecal sample for a test
but will do so soon.

Regarding your JRT, what kind of raw feeding diet is he on now, would
you be willing to share your recipe? I'm trying to find some
recommendations as guidelines for dogs of the same breed and weight.
Max is about 17 lbs. and is moderately active.

Best regards,
Sean S.

[rawfeeding] Re: Bad Vomit/ Need help

Pauline,

Just wanted to clarify--I meant it happened after my dog had mackarel,
and someone else said the same thing with their dog and mackarel.
