[rawfeeding] Elbow Displaysia/O.C.D. and Raw Diet

I too have a lab 2yrs old. diagnosed with OCD,(similar to elbow
displaysia) in both elbows, since feeding him on raw 80 % meats,10%
organs and 5% bone fish//fish oils,now for 6 months , he has
improved a lot, i can now walk him 2hrs a day,instead of 1hr.
he still needs a lot more rest after his walks than a healtthy dog
his age. I cannot tell what part of his diet is working, but it is!!.
there is a lot of hype about the benefits of Glucosomyne/ and Vit. C
for Adult dogs But.if anyone can point to some good reading sources,
I would love to research this issue.

Jenn,
I know everyone is mentioning to feed outside or in the kitchen but
other options are to feed on a place mat, a towel, in a shallow bin,
or even in a new cat litter box from the dollar store. I feed my dog
on a place mat and I fold it in half and store it in the freezer until
I can get around to washing it. It is a carpet texture because my dog
insists on eating on the carpet.

Vickie,

Sounds like it may be "bile and bone bits vomit" (bbbv), in which case it's
nothing to worry about...just a normal, healthy reaction to a bone-heavy
meal where the stomach decided that it had worked on it long enough and the
bone was now classified as an irritant (which may be why the grass was
there, too), so up it came.

Do an archive search on "bile and bone bits" and you'll see that it's not
unusual...especially for the new to raw dogs getting bone-heavy meals.

I feed my adult dogs outside, year round; I feed the cat and the
pupster inside. I also feed senior and/or impaired dogs inside.

First you teach the wanderer to stay put. This is not hard. Once
the eating is contained to a mat or towel or section of vinyl table
cloth or shower curtain or whatever, the traveling bacteria issue
will pretty much be resolved.

Second, if you have to do any clean up, soap and water is just
dandy. Spritzing with vinegar/water is also wonderfully effective
and not harmful to dog or environment.

Salmonella is not likely to be big deal from food; if your dog poops
in the house though you might have to worry.

Oh gosh and one more thing-at what age do you switch from two
> meals/day to one??
*****
I think it ultimately depends on the dog but I'm ready to pull the
plug on two meals at around a year. By then though I've already
transitioned to one small meal and one large meal. Ditching the
small meal when the time comes is no big deal.

Re: [rawfeeding] Re: where do you feed your dogs-esp. more than one dog

HI There,

I live in apartment with my 2 large dogs. I can't feed outside, so I feed them in the Kitchen/hallway. My dogo is very food agressive, so I use a babygate to blockade my greyhound (she's a slow eater) outside of the kitchen. The food just get's thrown on the linoleum and I disinfect as soon as they are done. It's very easy clean up.

A. the grass caused her to vomit or B. the undigested bone bits were
irritating which led her to eat the grass which caused her to vomit.
Either way, her response is a normal reaction to an irritant. That she
dispatched the problem is a good thing. Were the undigested bone bits
to have stayed in her tummy, she would have be worse off by far.

Tell you husband it's okay.

The meal yesterday consisted

I suspect you fed her too much bone/too little meat. The organ bits
were probably not an issue. Since chicken backs historically skimp on
meat, adding more than "some" breast meat is typically recommended.

Her response to a digestive irritant is appropriate. As she logs in
more raw hours, her digestion will be better able to deal with bony
meals. I think this sort of event has happened to all of us; it is not
necessarily limited to newbie feeders or newbie dogs.

[rawfeeding] Re: Hello, I'm new. I need some help please.

--- In rawfeeding@yahoogroups.com, "Laura" <laurac2cheshire@...>

**I've been feeding my dogs Raw for about a week – raw in AM and
kibble in PM.

I do feed one of my dogs a mix (for now). He is getting the kibble
he was weaned on in the AM then raw with my other dogs in the PM.
He usually doesn't finish the kibble. But as you will see below,
this worked best with his system. I plan on changing him completely
to raw when 1 of 2 things happen. Either I run out of the kibble
the breeder gave me or he's old enough and gaining weight enough to
change to one meal a day. Every dog is different. That's important
to remember.

**It seemed everyone was doing very well until yesterday my one dog
had loose stool. Today her stool was completely liquid.

My pup also had this happen. What I did was stopped feeding him
chicken (which at the time was all my dogs were getting because I
had just started) I started feeding him pork neck bones and cheek
meat. After about a week his system was back to normal, but he was
skinny. The important thing is to be sure the sick dog is getting a
lot of water. Encourage the dog to drink. When you feed, feed half
until the stools are normal then increase amount back to normal. I
would also which the meat you are feeding to something else.

About the prices, I would see if there is a meat wholesale store
near you. I get my organs, pork neck bones, and cheek meat from the
wholesale store near me. I get my chicken and fish from Wal-mart.
The trick (that I'm still learning) is shop by price per pound not
by total. I won't pay more than $1/lb. Also, buy in bulk. This
will save tons of money. Also, don't be afriad to ask at your local
grocery store if they have any meat that is about to expire. The
last day meat you can usually get cheap because them making any
money is better than throwing it away.

I hope this helps. Don't get too stressed about the sick pup. If
it's just the liquid poo, her system is trying to kick-out what's
bothering her. Give her a lot of water, maybe even no salt chicken
broth. If it goes on after changing her diet and reducing it. Take
her to the vet, but don't let them tell you it's the diet.

Thanks,
Erin Pepper

I was the same way when I started. I put one dog on raw first with the

[rawfeeding] Re: where do you feed your dogs-esp. more than one dog

***MODERATOR'S NOTE: TRIM AND SIGN YOUR MESSAGES.***

Hi there. My husband and I have two dogs. A lab mix and a beagle
pup. We have feed both of them outside in the backyard once a day
and it works well. The lab brings hers to the middle of the yard and
the beagle keeps hers where ever we drop it. I don't think we'll
ever feed them inside, I can't imagine having to clean up after
them.

[rawfeeding] Choking

So I am pretty much over being freaked out about choking on bones, but
I always read on this list that a dog can choke on any food (kibble,
treats, etc) and that bones are no more of a threat. "yeah right," I
thought.
Well this morning my dog plowed through his turkey hunk (butchered by
me too poorly to be quantified as a "quarter," lol), and then choked
on an old mother hubbard treat that I gave him before I left for work.
So there- dogs can choke on anything!

Jaimie

(I swept it out of his mouth and he ate the slimy bits back out of my
hand, no big deal, but it put me in my place)

[rawfeeding] Re: where do you feed your dogs-esp. more than one dog

---"streakinsixx"
**one post that stated the kitchen. Is this where most of you feed?

I feed all 3 of my dogs in the kitchen. Not that there's something
magic about that place but it makes clean up easier (see next answer).
I have a dominate female lab, a very submissive greyhound mix, and a
puppy trying to find his place. The pup always tries to get to the
other's food, but I just correct him and wait til he's calm before I
put he food down. He's getting the idea. Just wait in your spot and
your foods coming.

**Also, how do you deal with bacteria/salmonella issues? Mine sometimes
drag around to multiple spots on the foor?

I clean with Lysol 3 in 1 cleaner. I bought a big bottle to mop with
and made a spray with some of it. I spray and wipe after every meal
and mop once a week. I haven't had any problems.

Thanks,

Re: [rawfeeding] where do you feed your dogs-esp. more than one dog

I feed my older guy in the yard and my puppy gets fed on the deck on a door
mat. There's been no issues thus far as far as fighting. My old guy will
walk past my puppy with food in her mouth and leave her be, but if I leave
her food on the mat he will try to snatch it. I keep extra food out of the
way and give it to her as she finishes the previous piece. My old guy gets
his entire dinner just dumped on the grass in the yard. I don't worry about
bacterial issues since they eat outside.

As far as food aggression, that's a behavioral issue, IMO. I routinely put
my hands in my pups food dish and take her food away to show her that I will
dole out the food when I want to since I am the alpha dog. I also make her
sit calmly and wait for her food. I don't feed dogs who are jumping wildly
about trying to grab food out of my hands. We've had no issues thus far
although she started to show some signs of food aggression - that was nipped
in the bud and we've had no issues since.

[rawfeeding] Re: Elbow Dysplasia

Try feeding Vitamin C -- there is a huge body of literature out there
to suggest that while it can not cure diplasia, it can lessen the
symptoms. In fact it is suggested to feed pregnant bitches Vit. C and
pups till the age of 2 -- to help bone formation.

I was getting my hearts, livers, lungs from a slaughter house, but
somone told me that unless the cows are grass-fed,organic, hormone -
free that I am feeding my dog, all the hormones and antiboitics that
are injected into the animals. But where do I find grass-fed organic
organs? Personnaly I feel feeding what I have been getting is better
than not giving any organs. I need some advice on this.

[rawfeeding] where do you feed your dogs-esp. more than one dog

I am very new to raw feeding-about two weeks. I attempted to search
archives to see if there was any discussion on location to feed. I
found one post that stated the kitchen. Is this where most of you
feed? I have an older dog I just switched over and a pup that was
raised raw. She has been a little food aggressive and appears to
feel as though she must gulp hers down before someone else gets it??
Not completely sure, just guessing. She is almost four months old
and about fifteen pounds. She can consume a chicken quarter in no
time flat and swallows venison pieces about whole.

Sometimes I feed one in the kitchen and one outside(to prevent her
from eating so fast) or sometimes both outside(but at a distance)
since it is warm.

Also, how do you deal with bacteria/salmonella issues? Mine
sometimes drag around to multiple spots on the foor?

Oh gosh and one more thing-at what age do you switch from two
meals/day to one??

If there is a link that you can direct me to, I will be happy to
check it out. Or if someone can share some ideas, I would be very
greatful as well.

Thank you so much for your time and patience in this matter.

Thanks, but the BARFingChicago list doesn't "promote" any particular way of
raw feeding. Sometimes "BARF" is just the legacy name for "raw feeding."

Or at least that's what the list's intro file "We call it Raw Feeding now "
told me.

[rawfeeding] Re:How much fat?

I use pork picnics often. I trim most of the thick fat off for my large male (170lb). He will not eat the whole thing at one time, not yet at gorge and fast. After trying to let him eat what he wants and then removing for next meal we had exploding butt, did not eat enough of the bone for him, even with the fat trimmed. He has always had a touchy stomach. No harm in going slowly. I now hack off some of the meat to feed with some chicken legs, then give the rest on the bone the next day or 2. The 30 lb female is only on raw for less than 2 months and is still a little prissy about large pieces. She gets some of the hacked off meat with her boney meal. I would go easy on the fat to start or have lots of paper towels and enzyme cleaner on hand. We are looking forward to the day when I can just drop the whole picnic on the floor and let them eat it at will. I try to remember that most meat we buy is far fattier than the wild counter parts and wolves don't have to wait for us to get home from work to go outside to potty.

Feeding half-and-half has the potential to really impede your dogs'
digestion. A cold-turkey switch is probably easier on them, and
therefore, on you.

I so do not know So. Cal. geography, but you should be near SOME
pickup site for a good co-op:
http://www.socalbarf.com/SoCalBARF/Welcome.html
You should easily be able to keep your purchases below $1 / pound.
Please check them out.

For trouble-shooting (and, really, for help with keeping cost down),
it's useful to know what you're feeding when you feed raw. Everyone
who comes here means something different! Could you tell us what you
fed & how much?

My usual advice would be to simplify: feed just one type of critter
(usually chicken to start), and feed a lot more meat than bone. If
you're not already feeding thru whole chickens, I'd advise you try
that. Buy whole chickens, lop into parts as needed to create "meal-
sized" portions, and feed those.

And no pumpkin: it masks whatever the problem is without fixing a
danged thing.

RE: [rawfeeding] Source Info Needed - Freecycle

about the meat, someone gave me a big roast that had been frozen for 5 yrs!!! So i thawed it out almost all the way and sliced it. About 1/4" in the meat was brown, but after that 1/4" the meat was perfectly pink like it shoould be!! I was kinda amazed at that myself. They ate it and had no ill effects.

I was afraid was a bit too freezer burnt for us and cut it up for my dogs.

I know you don't want to hear this, but this is really a dog-by-dog
determination, so no one else can tell you what's too much for your
dogs. But! The good news is, you can figure it out. And then
you'll know. And -- I apologize, I'm digressing from what you want
to know -- I personally took great satisfaction in how WELL I got to
know my dog once I started raw feeding. It was such a change from
the unquestioning "4 cups a day," and I realized there's SO MUCH MORE
to know -- my point being, this really doesn't have to be a drag,
having to figure all this out for yourself.

Oh yes, aren't they lovely? Incidentally, there's a bone in there
that may impede your cutting-in-half plan, unless you know where
you're going when you start cutting. Or you can just let the dogs
work on the same piece, probably one after the other.

What I would advise, to start, is a small meal, maybe 1/2 - 2/3 their
usual size. Maybe just lop off a hunk of pork meat-and-fat (and yes,
definitely leave the skin as much as you can) and let the dogs have
that. Or let them work on the unfettered picnic until you think
they've had a small-meal's-worth. See how they do with that amount.
Next time, either lop of a bigger piece or let the dogs chew off a
bigger piece.

Some dogs get looser stools with a lot of fat, but starting with
smaller meals should help. Also, feed when you know you'll be home
for at least a few hours. When I've overfed fat, it's not a big
deal, but my dog DOES appreciate being taken out promptly when the
too-much-fat loose stools hit.

Soy is some questionable stuff. All the controversy re: soy in the
human diet is OT for this list, but if you're interested, just
google "soy" sometime. For dogs, my biggest concern would probably
be that soy is a common allergen.

I use them, so clearly I don't think that small amount matters. But
IF my dog ever developed the itchies, you can bet that would be the
first place I'd look. Right after treats.

If you feel that your dog needs more omega-3's, you're likely to
continue needing a supplement to provide them. Feeding some fish --
even if it's the right kind of fish, that actually IS high in o3's --
is unlikely to provide enough o3 all by itself. Unless that's MOST
of what you're feeding, which it probably won't be.

The ideal-world way to deal with this would be to feed only pastured
meats, nothing grain-fed. Short of that, the long-term supplement a
lot of people use is salmon oil. Bottled, so no capsules!

Lots of options, and you're unlikely to break your dog by picking one
and trying it. Just be willing to be flexible in case whatever you
pick doesn't work out.

[rawfeeding] regurgitating bones

Hi, this morning my one dog regurgitated some small pieces of bone from
the meal yesterday afternoon. Along with it was fluid and a sizable
amount of grass. This dog has never done this before and has my
husband a little concerned, although she was perfectly ready for her
small meal we feed them in the mornings. The meal yesterday consisted
of chicken backs (including some small pieces of the organ parts still
attached to it) along with some breast meat. Anyone else have
occurance of this? Thanks .......... Vickie
