Hang around and just read all the entries here and you'll learn all
you need to know about what, how much, and how to feed your pup, as
well as the answers to all common newbie questions.

Have hope and stick with it! My GSD girl, Amber, had chronic diarrhea
on every sort of kibble known to vets. We dealt with it for two and a
half years, then it cleared up within TWO DAYS once I started feeding
her raw. Now she eats just about any sort of meat without any real
problems, and she's beginning to put on some weight like I want her
to. Congratulations on starting!

I guess if it were me I would not even bother feeding them to my dog
if there is even a shred of evidence that almonds would be toxic to
dogs. They are a totally useless food for dogs anyways so I see no
point in risking it.

The only nuts that I know of that ARE toxic to dogs are Macadamia nuts:

http://www.aspca.org/site/DocServer/toxbrief_0402.pdf?docID=115

But fortunately they haven't been known to cause any deaths. But the
clinical signs are pretty alarming! Fortunately the animals seem to
recover pretty much on their own.

[rawfeeding] re: new to raw with GSD

>>I have a gsd that I would like to start feeding raw to.. Can someone tell me how much to feed and what. thanks-Jen

She is on science diet id becasue everything else causes colitis to act up-<<

Hi, Jen -- I have a GSD with digestive issues, too, and she's the reason I started feeding raw. Her health turnaround has been miraculous, and she's been doing this for 6 yrs.
One of the easiest things to start with is chicken -- buy whole chickens, cut in half and feed to your girl. The next day, feed the other half. It really is this easy!
Stick with chicken for a week or so, then start adding different proteins. Pork is usually reasonably priced around here, so maybe that's a good choice for second. Lamb is great but too pricey for me most times, as is goat. If you or friends hunt, venison is a terrific source of protein.
"How much" is harder for me to answer with meat other than chicken, as I don't "weigh" any of my dogs' (7 plus 9 puppies) food -- I just eyeball it and feed. If I see them getting too heavy, I cut back; if they're looking too thin (unlikely here as I like my dogs lean) I would increase the food. I'm pretty causual about it.
I suspect that your GSD's colitis will *act up* less -- maybe even not at all -- when you get her adjusted to a species-appropriate diet!! Good luck.

Almost every website includes almond in their list of can't feeds,
but the ASPCA, the source of especially dire warnings about grapes
and onions and chocolate, considers almonds safe as regards to
toxicity.

My Yorkie likes a nibble of almonds and Brazil nuts whenever I eat
them. Is this okay for her?
—Alison R.

The good news is that there is currently no data indicating that
Brazil nuts (Bertholletia excelsa) or almonds (Prunus dulcis) are
toxic to animals.

They can, however, cause stomach upset if eaten in large quantities.
All nuts contain fats, which can lead to gastrointestinal upset, such
as vomiting and diarrhea. Foods with high fat content can also
potentially produce an inflammatory condition of the pancreas known
as pancreatitis. In addition, many commercially sold nuts are salted—
and if a pet consumed a large volume of salt from the nuts, this
could potentially pose a risk for the development of a sodium ion
toxicosis.

I have heard that Macadamia Nuts can cause paralysis in dogs for 36 hours - This happens and there is "no known reason" so many dogs get put to sleep from it - I haven't heard about any other nuts with issues, but I will do my research

hope this helps

Re: [rawfeeding]

Hi Jen,

I would start out with something easy to digest such as bone-in chicken
breasts....feed 2-3% of ideal weight per day and see how it goes. If she
truly does have colitis you need to go slow and not feed too much food or
too much variety in the beginning.

[rawfeeding] First time Fish feeding

Quick update: 12 week old 10 lb. Mini Schnauzer

1 week: raw chicken: Drums, wings, leg quartersand small amount of
liver. = firm poop

2nd week: PORK: Western style ribs and heart = soft runny poop. It
seems the bone is harder to chew for her so she may not be getting
enough bone. Also I may have fed to much heart.

3rd week: 1 feeding so far of Whole (gutted) white seabass. I cut the
head off to help her get started thinking she would eat the fillet and
to my surprise she ate the HEAD!. OMG it was so gross and I was a
little bit worried but she was fine (except for a fishy smell). I
picked up the body of the fish and will give it to her in the morning.

I plan on feeding some fish and some beef during her 3rd week. Maybe a
beef neck to try and get some more bone in her diet.

[rawfeeding] Re: Lamb shanks

Lamb shanks are one of the few things my collies seem to enjoy. The ones I get are about 6-8 inches long and my two fussy dogs will chew on them until all the meat is off and the bone glistens, but will not eat the bone. Works for me, I just pick up what they leave and throw it away.

[rawfeeding] Re: small ostrich necks

I personally wouldn't feed them to my gulper (20 lb. Boston). Bad size
and probably lots of sharp, cut edges. I think it's harder for them to
manage and figure out how to manipulate and chew things like that, even
if they might want to! :-)

[rawfeeding] Re: New Here (after computer problems

Hi, Rana!
For exercise suggestions, do they like balls or squeaky toys? You can
toss these toys down a long hallway for exercise if they will chase
them, even if the don't bring them back - you just need a bunch of
them. When the toys are all at the other end of the hall, just swap
ends with them! If they won't chase them, you could try tying toys on
a piece of long cord and dragging and twitching it across the floor -
putting a bit of meat/fish juice or tying a soft bone to it makes it
more interesting, too.
As for feeding recommendations; I suggest you are making feeding your
dogs unnecessarily complicated and are not giving them the nutrition
they really need.
Also, the raw food you are feeding is too bony by itself.
-Ditch all the other "stuff" you are feeding, give it to a shelter or
rescue group if you are reluctant to throw it away.
-Go to the grocery store; buy several whole chickens. Be sure there
are no salt solutions, *retained water, flavorings or seasonings -added.
-Cut them up into quarters.
-Offer them each a quarter at one meal a day.
-Whatever each of them hasn't eaten in about 15 minutes, pick up and
put back in the fridge.
-Serve the rest of this portion the next day.
=Offer a tiny piece of the liver (the size of your thumbnail) or
gizzard or heart as a 'snack' to each of them at some other time of day.
Repeat.
After you have fed through several chickens and added the exercise
fun; maybe a few weeks, reevaluate your dogs weight. Look at them from
the top; are they a little less wide? From the side, is there the
beginnings of a little tuck up in the belly area? Put your fingers on
their sides and rub lightly back and forth. Can you feel a bit if
'washboard' ribs? If so, then they are losing bulk, and maybe some
weight, too. Don't expect to take weight quickly from a small dog,
slower is better for their health.
A species appropriate whole prey model diet will be all they need for
optimum nutrition without all those expensive and unnecessary
supplements and additives. Too much bone and all the other stuff in
their diet now is the reason for the hard stools; this will resolve
itself on a better balanced diet of unprocessed raw meat, organs &
bones. After several weeks you will need to add a different protein
into their diet; let us know when you're ready to move on.

Take a few deep breaths, Rana, in and out, slowly. ; ) It will be all
right.
Really. : )

[rawfeeding] Re: new to raw feeding in Ohio

Hi, Angelika!
There have been numerous messages posted about creative ways to source
a cheap or free variety of raw meats. I recommend that you search the
group site for archived posts.
Here is one I found;
"> where do you look for meat suppliers?

Hi Katie,
My apologies if you've already seen this - I thought this might give
you a few ideas:

Less Expensive Sources of Meat:

1) look up meat and poultry packers, processors, and distributors in
the yellow pages. You may be able to get great prices from them if
you order in bulk, and/or they may have a discount outlet that is
open to the public.
2) I get many of my best deals in Asian/Oriental markets. I've also
heard that Hispanic and Caribbean markets have great variety and
prices too.
3) you may be able to join a barter group.
4) google breeders (i.e. rabbit, goat, lamb, etc.) who are in your
geographic area. They may have culls they want to get rid of, or
lower prices overall.
5) look up bulk suppliers and frozen bulk foods in your yellow pages.
6) if you have a Chinatown nearby, definitely make a visit.
7) let your friends, relatives, and neighbors know you want any
freezer burn or old meat when they clean out their freezers, and tell
them to pass the word along.
8) if you belong to a church or social group, tell those members to
mention it to their friends and relatives as well.
9) see if there are any co-ops or meat buying groups near you. Check
on Yahoo, or google to see.
10) try Craigslist - it's amazing what you can get for free or cheap.
11) and I get meat and fish all the time (for free) through Freecycle.
12) some Wal-marts and some Costcos and some Sams Clubs have good
deals, but you may want to make sure it's not seasoned meat.
13) definitely watch the the flyers, and you can usually see the rest
of the flyers online (the ones that don't get delivered to your house,
but are only a short drive away).
14) *** hands down, the bulk of my best deals have been marked down
meat at regular grocery stores. They reduce it the day before it is
going to expire, and I go as early as I can to get it before it is
gone.
15) tell friends and relatives who hunt and fish that you want first
dibs on any body parts they don't. You can probably get at least the
organs and maybe the head. Also ask them to put you in touch with
their other friends who hunt and fish.
16) a great tip I learned here a couple of weeks ago - some
restaurants throw out things they don't use, like the organs that
come inside whole poultry. see if they'll save them for you.
17) farmer's markets are great, but pick and choose carefully for the
best bargains.
18) some people contact taxidermists, who have no use for the meat.
19) find people on this list from your vicinity, and ask them where
they get their meat deals.
20) tell your butcher you want the meat that they would normally
throw out, that is almost out of date, that people ordered and didn't
pick up, stuff that was dropped on the floor, their freezer
cleanouts, and parts that don't sell (like trachea, lungs, spleen,
etc.). Some butchers will save their trim for you (once they get to
know you).
21) yes, roadkill works too. In some places you can get your name on
the list and get called when they have roadkill (like deer)
22) you can raise your own meat/poultry if you have the room
23) post a message in CarnivoreFeed-Supplier or CFS-Canada if you are
in North America:
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CarnivoreFeed-Supplier/
http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/CFS-Canada/
24) speak to local farmers

I think your safest solution is to feed him the amount appropriate to
the weight you want him to be. Since amount fed also takes into
consideration age, health and activity level, you have room to
experiment in. Two per cent a day? One and a half? As long as you
are giving him a healthy variety of meat, meaty bones and organs, a
smaller amount will not necessarily short him nutritionally.

Or you could just assemble what you think what a meal ought to be,
then remove some of it. And use changes (or lack thereof) in his
physical appearance as your guide.

And of course you should be strict about treats and even stricter
about horning in on anyone else's food.

When my dogs--and cat--are looking fleshier than I'd prefer, I feed
the same menu, just less of it. With the dogs I'm likely to add
another "fast" day to their itinerary; for the cat though I just
offer smaller meals. I usually see an appropriate change in week or
two. A seriously overweight but otherwise healthy dog might need as
many as three months to shape up. A chubster with health issues may
have to lose even more slowly.

Re: [rawfeeding] Re: YouTube Video of my Dog Raw Feeding.

Hi Ed,

that was a joke with where I can get such a dog :-) We already got 6 dogs,
thats enough for now :-)
But she is soooo cute! You can be lucky that you found her! Really a nice dog.
And the video is great! I like to see other dogs eating raw food!
Give her a kiss,

Yvonne

She is a Havanese that I adopted from a rescue. Found her through
Petfinder.com. Check around, there may be a local rescue nearby at
least. I don't know about Germany, but here in the USA, dogs are
thrown away constantly. It's so sad. Can you believe that this
adorable dog was abandoned twice?

She's so lucky I found her.

[rawfeeding] Re: Raw feeding a 1.5 pound puppy ?

Hi,
I'm a newbie and started my two Yorkshire Terriers on raw a few days
ago. My 11 year old 9 pounder and my 1.5 pound puppy. I started them
with chicken thighs. The older one wouldn't touch it and went hiding.
The puppy dragged it around for 30 minutes and couldn't get ANY meat
off.
=============

Hi Nadia,

There are lots of people on here with small dogs, 3 to 10 lbs.
Mine is 9 1/2 lbs & 9 yrs old!

Please check out the past posts, there's lots and lots of information
on feeding smaller dogs.

You need to start with one protein and chicken seems to be the best
one.

Pork can give dogs runny stools as it's a fatty meat and needs to be
introduced slowly.

Start by giving a chicken breast, bone in. Break the bone down by
covering it with a towel and beating it with a hammer till there are
only small bits in it.

Try chopping it up into small chunks, especially for your older dog.
Also older dogs need less bone. If he has bad teeth then it may take
him a long time to be able to eat larger
pieces. You should probably consider having them cleaned by a vet to
make sure there are none that are infected and prevent him from
eating.

Since they already have runny stools try removing the skin from the
chicken till the stools clear up.

You can rub the chicken with cheese or butter/lightly or even
sear it on the outside to get the older one to try it.

Sometimes putting salmon oil on it works too.

Don't start the older one on organs till you've gotten him used to
eating the chicken.

Just give the little one the tinest amount of organs with his chicken
breast after a few days of eating till you see how they will affect
him (don't want runny stools)

You can use a baby wipe after they're done eating.

Get some old towels out and teach them to eat on the towels.

Put down food and if they leave the towel, put it back on the
towel,they will catch on quickly.

Hope this helps......Just keep reading the posts and you'll be amazed
at how much you'll learn and how many of us are here!

P/S if you haven't watched Ed's video of his little one eating raw you
should, lol. Here's the link........

"A chicken's skin color comes from the diet it was fed and the same bird
could have a white skin or a yellow skin, depending on what it ate. The diet
that produces a yellow skin is more expensive than the usual diet, but the
people at Perdue Farms feel it's worth it because a yellow skin color is one
of the fastest ways Frank's inspectors have of finding and disqualifying an
inferior bird. If a bird is sick or off its feed, it doesn't absorb
nutrients well and won't develop the rich golden color that is characteristic
of Perdue birds. Also, if part of a bird's outer skin is "barked", that is,
rubbed off due to rough handling during processing, the Perdue inspectors can
detect it more easily than with a white-skinned bird. Detecting and removing
and chicken with a barked skin is important because damaged skin shortens the
shelf life and dries out and toughens the meat. No white colored chickens
get by the [Perdue] inspectors. "

"Chickens are marketed with either yellow or white skin depending on the
market. California is generally a yellow skin market, but it is becoming more
mixed. Yellow-skinned chickens generally command a premium over white-skinned
chickens. In California, yellow skin is associated with higher quality. In a
general sense, this is true.

Yellow skin comes from lower processing temperatures and from the chicken's
diet. Corn produces yellow skin. Some Out-of-State chicken producers feed
chickens marigold seeds to create yellow skin. [Lora's note: see below where
Perdue admits to it themselves!] Chickens that are washed in higher
temperatures are more easily defeathered by machine. In order to retain
yellow skin, lower temperatures and more labor is required. Lower
temperatures help retard bacterial growth and let the chicken's skin retain
its natural protection against germ inoculation. This helps shelf life.

There are certain advantages to white skin, however. White skin will hold
batter better, get crispier faster and has less calories than yellow skin."

Read more on this site to break your heart about what "free-range" means.

"All breeds of chicken grown in the United States naturally have yellow skin,
but it must be maintained through a healthy diet and careful handling. We
feed our chickens the finest natural grain products, including yellow corn,
marigolds, soybean meal, vitamins and mineral supplements to help maintain
their natural yellow skin color. Golden yellow skin is your assurance of a
healthy and well-fed Perdue chicken."

That wouldn't be hard to define, any more than defining that most prey
animals average out to be 80/10/10 . . . average blood volume, average
salinity, dosed according to amount fed.

>Sounds like a belt and suspenders operation to me. Seems to operate

Veggies in the diet are based on an error in wolf research. I don't think
that the ingestion of blood from a prey animal would be arguable.

Of course, again, you do get into the question of how much salt in the water
- it does have to be palatable. I did see beef blood in one of the ethnic
grocers . . . I'll put that on my list of research to do's - see if they like
lapping up any of it. I'll save the rest of Halloween. Or someone walking by
in a fur coat.

[rawfeeding] Re: YouTube Video of my Dog Raw Feeding.

She is a Havanese that I adopted from a rescue. Found her through
Petfinder.com. Check around, there may be a local rescue nearby at
least. I don't know about Germany, but here in the USA, dogs are
thrown away constantly. It's so sad. Can you believe that this
adorable dog was abandoned twice?

She's so lucky I found her.

[rawfeeding] New Here (after computer problems

Hello Everyone,

My name is Rana I just started feeding my boys raw they are mini dachshunds.
So you know the breed cant get to heavy due to the back problems and such.
I have looked for sites deiced just to them with little luck. Most within
the groups I am in have big breed dogs. THey have always gotten Verve its a
new Dehydrated Raw Dog food, made with Beef, Veggies, fruits, and organic
grains. I also add a bit of pumpkin to Keirnan cause he has problem popping
more then little pieces that look like peanuts when he was on this and
kibble at night.

So they still get the Verve in the mornings. Connor a 1/4 of a cup and
Keirnan 1/2 of a 1/4 of a cup with a teaspoon of yogurt nonfat and pumpkin.

In the eveningsL gets a full wing and a small cut up pieces of turkey neck.
Keirnan a small wing.

Now I will tell you Connor is 14 inches from noise to the base of his tail
he is what breeds call a tweenie not a full mini but not a standard. Both
of his parents were minis. So know knows. Keirnan on the other hand is
like 8 inches long and weights 12 pound with is over weight for a mini they
arent suppose to be over 11 pound but this is full of hair omg . His parent
were about 8 pounds. Here is the kicker I have panic attacks to cant runn
then like I should but OCnnor runs all ofer the house Keirnan has no
interest no matter what I try.

My question is should I weight their food and to what ratio should they be
on. They are going to the vet on the 12th. Since I just moved here not a
clue if he one that is fine with raw feeding a lot but I have heard many
good things about him so giving him a test run.

I need help on how much to feed my boys Connor I am scare is not getting
enough scared he is getting to much.

Worried Rana

[rawfeeding] new to raw feeding in Ohio

Hi everybody,
my stepdaugher would like to start feeding her danes raw. However, she cannot find any fresh tripe, nor trachea or any other raw food. Of course, grocery stores carry meat, but at those prices, it will be hard to feed her 8 dogs. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

[rawfeeding] Re:Combining and weaning.

My little Shih Tzu x, Pepper, we adopted a week ago. He's 1 year old and
weighs 7.3 kg. . . I decided to make slower changes. I've mixed in a
commercial raw food kibble (with the stuff they sent home) as well as given
him chicken wings and backs/legs (bits of giblet and liver attached). For
treats, dried liver. Pepper seems to be responding so well to this
introduction to raw feeding. Any suggestions for the best plan for my little
man?

Yep! Toss the k***** and switch to all raw immediately.

Tessa, my recently adopted Maltese is smaller than Pepper and was changed to
a raw diet the first night I brought her home. Her previous owner was a well
meaning lady who warned me that Tessa was a picky eater and would eat
nothing but the carefully weighed portions of cooked minced meat, pumpkin
and rice that were fed twice a day at set times. She gave me a supply of her
'special diet' to bring home with me, told me which brand of crapinabag was
the only one she would eat and warned me against bones, uncooked food etc.

Tessa's first meal at my home was a boneless, raw chicken breast which she
loved and tho' she's only been with me for a couple of months, she's eaten a
variety of raw meats, organs and bones and has set up her own timetable for
gorge and fast.

As well as the usual benefits such as sweet breath and white teeth, raw
feeding has also mellowed Tessa to the extent that she's no longer a
hyperactive, snappy little prima donna, but a dog who accepts me as pack
leader and acts accordingly.

If Pepper is already eating and enjoying some parts of a raw diet, you're
not going to have problems getting him to eat so just toss the doom nuggets
and give him all real food. My only suggestion would be to follow the usual
rules of one meat at a time so his digestive system isn't burdened with too
much too soon.

Cheers
Sue
