[rawfeeding] gnaw-worthy bones

the topic of bully sticks made me realize that there's not much for
grover to chew on these days. her toys never last long, even the
"indestructible" ones. she gets bones in her meals, but she mostly
gobbles them up, except for lamb shanks, which she whittles down for
hours to nice clean little white pencils which is when i toss them. i
don't wanna get her some teeth-cracking femurs or anything, and it
seems like everything else is just a crunchy sidedish, EXCEPT for the
lamb shanks. what are some similar accessible bones that i should
keep an eye out for to give her some chewtime?

[rawfeeding] Re: Feeding frozen

i think we're lucky that our dogs are big on the meat popsicles. some
days i run out of defrosted stuff and just throw the little monster
some solidly frozen meat/bone/organ combo that i can't even recognize
except for the WARNING THIS IS DOG FOOD labels on them. and she works
on them quite happily. and i expect, for big dogs, it feels good on a
hot summer day. i think with all the gnawing, it ends up being the
same, just slower.

people have told me that it's not big deal as long as your dog doesn't
think it is. hope that helps!

Thanks Casey!  He just gobbled his food down, looks like strictly chicken for a day or two.  He does not seem to be uncomfortable...however, DROOL HE DOES!  LOL  Comes with the breed.  LOL

Thank you again, I don't know what I would do without this list!

Chelsea,

Doesn't sound like a blockage to me...straining can happen with soft poop.
It's one of those, "feels like there's more to come out, but there really
isn't sort of things"...especially if the lower intestine is a bit irritated
for whatever reason.

Keep an eye on him. My money is on him being fine.

As he stands now, no, I wouldn't be overly concerned, but should he take a
bad turn (drooling, hunched position, hiding, retching, anything else that
indicates pain, etc.), off to the vet, yeah?

[rawfeeding] Re: Dry skin and organ meat.

Right now they're getting raw, but possibly in the wrong percentages.
I started feeding them with chicken quarters (back, thigh and leg).
Recently, I started adding one egg a week and organ meats once a week.
I've also started with ground turkey once a week. This gives me a five
day rotation of chicken, organ, chicken, turkey (w egg), and chicken. I
give fish oil capsules once a day.

Do I need to add red meat specifically? It's kinda expensive and we're
short of cash right now.

Thank you, Penny! Things with rawfeeding are not
consistent yet; some dogs eat some things, not others,
and they don't all like the same things, natch. Oh
well, onward and upward.

Tell us more about what you're feeding - sounds like it might be a bit too
heavy on bone.

[rawfeeding] Re: Help please...blockage??

Hi, Chelsea!
You said "I get mixed stools, most everyone is great (powdery, white,
SMALL, stools)"
These are not great stools - too much bone! If you are getting these
kind of stools regularly, you are not feeding enough muscle meat.
Time to rethink what you are feeding. The "rule of thumb" is *about*
80% meat (muscle, skin, connective tissue) 10% organ 92-5% liver) and
10% bone.
Stools will reflect what your dog has eaten recently, but diarrhea or
dry, crumbly white stools aren't ideal. Your dog is probably just
having some distress from too much variety too soon with some too bony
meals prior to that.
Fast him for a meal, or two, give him access to plenty of water, the
problem should pass ; ) soon.
Try to keep it to one protein source at first, maybe for a couple
weeks. You have a giant breed, you could feed whole chickens or half
turkeys. Keep the organs simple, too. Chicken or turkey heart and
gizzards can be fed as meat, but liver can be very loosening. Just a
little bit with each meal, maybe the just size of your thumb.
You could add small chunks of meat to the old protein at meal time
when starting a new protein, if your guys tend to get digestive upsets
with new foods.

> Hello again everyone! I think we are doing pretty good on the raw
feeding so far. I get mixed stools, most everyone is great (powdery,
white, SMALL, stools), but I have been a little worried about my
biggest guy Rolex. I have not see him go to the bathroom (he usually
goes at the dog park in the mornings) for two days. I know he must be
going, but now with the "new" poop we are having a hard time
deciphering who's his who's! LOL But just now, I saw him strain for
about 2 minutes, trying to go. He went a little, and it was really
soft, and then he strained some more. He did have lamb last night for
the first time. If he had a blockage, nothing would come out, right?
He has not had any huge bones?? Should I be concerned. I gently
palpated his abdomen and he doesn't seem the least bit uncomfortable,
but he is panting a little more than normal...then again it is hotter
than normal and he is 175 lb mastiff?? Just a little freaked and want
some advice before I give him his dinner.

[rawfeeding] How many times a day to feed a cat?

Hi everyone, I started feeding my Chihuahua, Mia, a raw diet a few
months ago. She is doing really great and LOVES it!

We are about to adopt a 2-3 year old male cat at the end of June and
want to switch him to raw too. I already have a good idea of how to
go about switching him but I was wondering how many times a day I
would need to feed him. I am aware that you can't starve a cat out
like you can a dog and that they need to eat at least every day.
Would it be better to feed him twice a day or can he handle being fed
once a day?

Thanks!

[rawfeeding] Re: Diet tweak necessary?

Hi, Roni!
How new is Lily to raw feeding? Pretty new, maybe? If so, don't worry.
It can take awhile for a dog's digestive system to adjust. The
appearance of bone pieces in her stool, or vomit, will lessen over time.
You might want to rethink how much bone you are feeding. Edible bone
in the whole prey model diet isn't a large amount. Try for about 10%,
give or take a little.
Aim for *about* 80% meat, 10% organ & 10% bone.
Let us know how you progress.

Sorry I missed this post. Had that happen to my dog, ruptured disk,
totally blown. I had to have him operated on. Luckily I had the best
surgeon on spinal injuries in the mid-west do it. He came through fine.
Doesn't sound like your problem exactly and sounds like your dog is
older? I would ask about adding in the glucocmine supplement if she
were mine. I don't know if that would help her or not.

Hope she's doing better.

[rawfeeding] Re: Older Golden new to RMB

I just wanted to thank everyone who responded to this post for their
suggestions and support. I have reduced the amount of food and the
boney meals and she improved right away. It is so great to have the
support and expertise of this group...without you I probably would
have quit, over something so simple. My older dog (almost 13) still
has soft serve consistency poops...other than the clean up issue, is
that something to worry about? I'm hoping this will improve with a
little more time, or do I need to tweak her diet a little more? Right
now she's eating about a lb - bone in chicken breast (split into two
meals) and today by mistake some beef heart-got the bowls mixed up =(
but she seems fine with it.
Thanks again!

[rawfeeding] pug with mast cell cancer

Hello everyone. I am new to the group and I'm in desperate need of some
advice right away!!! I have 3 female pugs of which one, Cristie a 7 year
old, was just diagnosed with having a mast cell cancer tumor right next
to her anus. She goes in on Tuesday, June 5th, to have it removed and
then sent off to be graded/staged and I am horrified!!!!! The only good
thing out of this so far is that it has caused me to do some major
research into diet and I am now ready switch her, and the other 2, to a
raw diet. I am especially concerned with what would be the best recipe
for Cristie to help fight the cancer. Please advise on this and on any
"miracle" supplements that you may have heard or experience great things
from for helping with mast cell cancer. Also, one of my other pugs,
Daisie a 7 year old also, has suffered from horrible allergies for years
and I have tried doing the allergy shot thing for the last year but this
doesn't seem to be working. Any advice on a special raw diet and any
supplements that would be best for her?

Thank you,

[rawfeeding] Green Tripe

Ounce for ounce, is feeding tripe of the same nutritive/protein value
as, say, chicken or beef? Also, how many different kinds of tripe are
there? I mean, is there chicken tripe? (j/k but I *am* curious as to
how many kinds there are.

Tripe is not a substitute for whole meats. Like eggs, it is what it
is. Feed it along with other food, feed it by itself, stuff Kongs with
it, dehydrate it...but don't forget to to feed meat (flesh, fat, skin,
connective tissue) as well. When purchased commercially, tripe
typically comes coarsely ground. If you can get tripe in whole sheets
(or hunks of sheets) your dogs will enjoy wrestling with these larger
sections.

But if you cannot find good tripe, don't despair. It's not a required
food.

I think he'll be fine--nutritionally--for two boneless weeks, but
unless you've taken the time to acclimate him to boneless meals, you
are setting him up for digestive distress (which boarding produces
anyhow). I am quite sure neither he nor his temporary caretakers
will appreciate the aftermath of digestive distress.

If you are certain there will be no one you can trust to feed him
whole bones, I recommend either a. asap you start adjusting him to
boneless meals or b. you consider preparing your own ground meat and
bone meals or buying prefab meals composed of ground meat and bones.

Oh! I just thought of another option (dummy me). You probably will
feel comfortable with rib-in chicken breasts (with or without skin).
These are easy peasy and there's enough bone in the meal to keep the
stools socially acceptable (at least in my experience). A typical
half breast weighs about a pound--that should do for one meal in a
two meal program. If he's to be fed once a day, two breasts or one
breast with an appropriate amount of green tripe will PROBABLY keep
his stools pretty.

Whatever you decide, introduce him to the stuff BEFORE you go! If
your kid's digestion goes south while you not there to respond
properly, the kennel or your friend will have few if any options but
to dose him with Immodium et al, or to feed him kibble, or both.

Plan ahead!

[rawfeeding] Re: Watery Stools

I am new to the list. I own 7 Pomeranians, one toy poodle and one Great
Dane. Their ages range from two years to 13 years and all have been on
Science Diet all of their lives.
I started raw feeding two days ago because of the research I have done
since the pet food recall has made me realize that there may be a
better way to feed my pets. It would be great to have healthier happier
dogs. The dogs love the food and have not hesitated to devour every
morsel.
At least two of my dogs now have smelly watery stools and my husband
insists I'll kill them by giving them raw meat.
I've explained the transiton process, but I have no experience with any
if this.
Please reassure me that now is not the time to throw in the towel and
switch back to kibble.
If there are resources I may read, it would be helpful.
Thanks,
Edith

Go Palette! I'd bet -- since I also have a dog (albeit a bigger
dog!) who consumes beef necks -- that she'll be able to get through
at least oxtail as well. (Can you find it cheap though? Cuz I
can't, not anymore.) Ribs, though, are more iffy -- sometimes Griff
motors through them, sometimes he picks them clean and leaves the
bones.

Only way to know, for your dog, is to feed them & find out. At any
rate, they're not denser than teeth, so there's no harm in trying.

Do be careful with the oxtail -- you'll want a fairly large piece of
tail, not the pre-sliced stuff they usually sell in the store.

Good job, Yassy!

A four year old Lab unless it has significant health issues should be
getting larger whacks of chicken than thighs! A four year old card-
carrying rawfed Lab can eat a whole bird, can certainly eat half a
chicken, can easily eat a rib-in breast and will quickly dispatch a leg
quarter. A thigh just don't cut it for a foodie like a Labadore.

Swallowing without chewing is definitely what happens when a big dog is
given a small piece of food. No, no harm digestively--she will digest
it and obtain nutrients from it--and yes, such behavior (although
completely and utterly appropriate for both the dog and the thigh) does
not provide an iota of dental or mental hygiene.

Are you feeding an RMB for one meal and then offering a second meal--
perhaps of boneless meat (ground?) with or without veggies and
supplements. Yes? If so, I recommend you rethink your feeding plan.

Feed bigger and more challenging body parts--not just chicken but also
turkey parts, pork parts, rabbits/rabbit parts, lamb parts, goat parts,
whole fish...no more small. Or at least, no more exclusively small.
And if you ARE feeding a meat/veggie slop, don't waste your time. Your
lovely Labs do not need veggies and while they can derive nutrition
from ground meats, they certainly do not get mental, dental or physical
exercise from them.

recipe ideas!

I don't see this as a problem is SHE doesn't. I do not generally
feed frozen food and I would not likely recommend it for a small dog,
but for a RR, if it works, it works.

I feed chicken backs, turkey necks, and
> pork neck bones.
*****
However!
Is this ALL you feed? The menu in its entirety? I strongly
recommend for your dog's sake that you rethink your shopping list.
This is far too much bone on a regular basis--but even more
importantly, it's far too little meat and there appears to be no
organ meat.

A diet that approximates what prey animals provide in nature (the
whole likely range, from mice and rabbits up to elk and bison)
comprises on average 10% bone, 10% organs, and 80% meat!

A good raw diet is not based on RMBs since RMBs as they have come to
be defined offer MAYBE on a good day 50% meat, which of course means
50% bone. And of course no organs unless you're lucky enough to find
some kidney stuck to a chicken back. Rotated into and out of a
flexible diet, this is no big deal because over time the dog will get
plenty of meat and organs--because you will be including them. But
as the whole diet? Your dog simply does not need that much edible
bone. You dog simply does need more meat.

I hope what you have indicated as your dog's diet is shorthand for a
much meatier and more varied menu. FWIW, even when feeding a good,
meaty diet you can feed everything frozen if that's what works.

Re: [rawfeeding] Feeding frozen

Hi.I remember someone was posting feeding frozen food to dog a month ago or so and I think the post said feeding frozen big meat gets dog's body temperature dramatically and not good.

I think that frozen treats that are not too big like meaty meal be ok though.

[rawfeeding] Hi new to this....need advice please

Hi there I am new to this......very new. It has been two days I have
been feeding raw. I have a sable headed white collie pup about 7 months
old.

I bought some chicken frames at the butcher and also chicken legs. I
have been feeding both.

I was wondering what I should be looking for in the area of beef.
Something cheap of course. What kind of meat with bone is safe to give
her?

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

[rawfeeding] # of portions in the 80/10/10 formula

"80% meat (including skin, hide, fat, connective tissue, etc.) 10% bone & 10% organs (liver being only 2-5%)"

Here is my question on the 80/10/10 formula.....can each of these 3 categories be made more easily understood by saying what the # of portions of meat, bone and organs a week should be fed? I know the meat is most of the diet but breaking all of this down into how many portions a week of each would make me feel like I am giving my dogs the right proportions of these things.

Re: [rawfeeding] Feeding frozen

One of my dogs weighs in at 20#, I'm not much at math but I calculate that he needs approx 1/2 pound of meat per day.

I find that the pieces of meat that weigh in at 1/2 pound (or even less if I want to feed x2 a day) are too small for the gulper that he is. When I feed the pieces frozen with about 5 minutes of sitting in hot water, he can't gulp it, he has to chew it. There is enough play in the meat so that he doesn't break any teeth.

Mary Smallwood

I have 2 girls and they LOVE their food frozen - Nugget won't even touch a piece of food that isn't frozen solid - Kimber prefers to be frozen, but is happy to eat anything Nugget leaves behind - I haven't had any problems with them eating it this way and we have been feeding RAW for about 3 months - Hope this helps

*** That's sounds close to ideal as far as doggie diet goes. I doubt
there is a connection between the rough coat and diet. It is strange
that 2 dogs have it and the others don't. Is there something these two
get more often/get into/are exposed to that the others don't get/get
into?

Re: [rawfeeding] Tripe

It's the stomach of a ruminant animal, usually a sheep or cow. In
grocery stores they sell it cleaned and bleached for human consumption
(it's used to make menudo I think) but for our pets it's best to feed
"green" tripe which is the unwashed stomach.

Thanks Barbara, I did buy the bleached tripe from a butcher at an open air market. I don't know anyone that would have the green tripe.

Can you tell me if tripe is a substite for a beef, turkey, etc. meal? Or is is something we grind up and make patties with another meat? I don't know if I should feed it as a sole meal or not...

[rawfeeding] Salmon Oil

Hi,
I just ordered a gallon of salmon oil for my dogs because we go
through the capsules so darn fast.

I need to know from someone who uses the liquid, how much to give each
day. My dogs are both about 80 pounds.

Also, do I pour it on a saucer and let them lick it? Or a spoon? I'm
kind of stumped with this because I can't mix it "in" the food (with a
chicken half for instance). :/ Thanks in advance, Wendy J.

[rawfeeding] Vacation feeding

many thanks to all of you who got me stsarted on raw feeding my 65lb
golden about 6 weeks ago -- the last recall did me in. He is doing
well on it.

We will be travelling for two weeks and our boy will be one week at a
boarding kennel one week with a friend. I was thinking about kibble
but reading the archives talked me out of it. I plan on freezing raw
meals for him, but I just am not comfortable putting bones in these
meals -- we supervise him, once in awhile he has a small problem, once
in a while he throws up and I will not do that to the friend nor will
I trust these folks to supervise him.

Given that, will two weeks without bones be OK or should I somehow
supplement? He will be eating get chicken breast (bonelsss), chicken
liver, ground beef, Probably some pork and turkey. Also, can I throw
his salmon oil capsules in the bag and freeze them too?

Many thanks.

Melissa

[rawfeeding] Chicken thighs

I have two four year old labs. Fed raw since 7 wks old. I have noticed
the comments on chicken wings and I changed to chicken thighs for the
breakfast meal but they literally 'woolf' them down. There appears no
harm done and it could be extra enthusiasm but my girl eats sooo fast
I worry she doesn't benefit from the scrunching and chewing which is
good for the health?
