Hi.Try to feed on varied time so that dogs would not feel anticipated and turn to bile vomit if not fed on scheduled time.

My dog used to give vile vomit if not fed on certain time but thesedays,since I do not decide when to feed(only rule is she eats AFTER human eat) and she never give vomit at all,and sometimes,we get late to home from grocery shopping like at 9pm or sao and we eat that time and she gets fed and she is fine.Sometimes,I weake up early and she gets fed early than usual and she does ok.

She became more flexible.

less. Don't look to raw food as the culprit. Vets are all too ready
to jump to this conclusion without your help.

Hubby gets off in a little over an hour. We are going to be buying
some stuff for us and I get to do some doggie shopping. Nowhere near
what I want but I get to do some. If I can not get ALL she needs to
eat should I store it and wait til I have some surplus built up? I
do not want to get going on this only to be 3 days from payday (or
more heaven forbid) with nothing to feed but old kibble. II'm afraid
to toss the kibble because what if I hit a time when I have nothing
to feed?

Is a fasting day good for raw fed dogs? I hear yes and no on this
alot. A fast day how often? I figured out that her ideal adult
weight is about 63lbs (give or take a couple) so that comes to her
eating about 1lb 15.5 oz of meat a day? That is for 3% of the ideal
adult weight.

I'm going to look mostly at chicken to start and maybe get other
stuff if its on sale for later. Then I can do that everypayday for a
month then spread out the buying to just whats on sale? I mean as
long as she is getting variety and enough its ok right?

I plan to split the feeding to 2 times a day. She does well so far
with 2 a day.

Thoughts? Comments? Odd looks (lol I need a laugh)?

Hi Kathy,
I think that you might be better off to start with 2% of her ideal
weight which would make her eating closer to 1 and a quarter pounds a
day. Since one of the things that can cause loose stools is too much
food, i would start at 2% and adjust upward if you see the need. Of
course not all labs are the same, but mine and the ones i know tend to
be easy keepers. If there are no sales today, i think that you should
buy enough chicken to last you until the next pay day. If she is on
chicken longer than a week, its not a big deal, and since chicken is
cheapest to buy even if it is not on sale, its your best bet. If there
is nothing else on sale today, you can read the sale paper and look
for your next protein based on what you find on sale when you get paid
again. If there is a great sale on pork or turkey, they are good
second protein choices and tend to be on sale now, i would buy some of
that, too, if your budget says so. It took me a couple of months to
stock up and find sale prices on meats. After that, i was able to skip
buying because i had enough in the freezer and was able to hold off
buying until i found meat prices that were a great deal.

There is, imo, no reason to ever fast a healthy dog.

Have fun shopping. You are going to find that shopping for your dog
is a real rush. I well stocked freezer is a close second. KathyM

ALL she needs for the first couple of weeks is chicken. Don't worry
about anything else unless its a real good deal on sale the freeze
it for a couple of weeks.

Food is just a trip to the grocery store away. You can buy enough
chicken to get by a few days for just a few dollars.

Toss the kibble. You can always make a trip to the grocery store
for a little chicken if need be.

I think its pretty useless. A few will disagree with me.

Don't worry about variety in the first couple of months. Just
gradually add new meats as you go along.

First,
I lost the original thread...but wanted to comment our pups always had runny
poop since they day we brought them home (people here on this list taught me
the difference between runny poo & diarrhea)....
So, they had nothing but soft poop, runs or liquid, kept going to vets for
meds, nothing helped, so we switched to raw because accidents were NOTHING
for us due to what we had been dealing with for several months.....but the 3
Dane kids actually after the first few days had the first normal poop of
their lives!
However, a couple days ago Casper had watery poo when the other 2 were fine
& they eat the same things. So, sometimes it just happens, like with
people. It's still nothing compared to the crap we dealt with before and
the amount is basically NOTHING! We had several HUGE piles a day compared
to one tiny one once a day (average)
The Lhasas haven't had a problem....their switch went very well.

Second,

Amy's diet is doing ok... everyone here chips in to help feeding & my mum
(bless her heart) was giving the Lhasas a drum stick each. Well they are 20
lbs, 10 lbs & Amy on a drastic diet for being obese & should be 10 lbs... &
this was twice a day! OOpsies.... She's wonderful for helping though :-)
So, I saw how much my husband was feeding & last night I brought home the
SCALE! I showed him how much an ounce was in meat & figured out what would
be appropriate amounts & he balked! I know why he did, it just looks like
NOTHING!
So, I told him... "You are killing them with kindness, PLEASE, we need to do
this for them... " I also explained the temporary addition of a non
nutritional addition to help "HIM" through the transfer of such huge meals!
Sometimes it is the OWNERS who need to work on this feeding amounts because
they think they are starving them... I used to think that way but realized
how horrible having obese dogs was... I was very bad about wanting those
extra pounds on them for 'healthy' looking dogs, many years ago I began to
understand the important of the leanness... canines are becoming obese &
dying so young, bad health etc... This was another reason I went to raw, for
their health since I have special needs dogs/pups...
So he agreed, he seems to understand so I will watch him lol

Third,
Ideas for chewing & keeping busy for the seniors? I do give wreck bones,
sorry, I know you all hate these but I have dogs that cannot get around &
need to do something & these bones last for hours....Any other ideas out
there? We can't play fetch, go for walks....they need stationary play
things to keep them occupied.....

Lastly, the weights/proportions....
My 20 pounder should get 2 ounces a day because he is inactive! He is not
fat but he is plump & has lost some weight. Is 1 ounce organs & 1 ounce of
liver per week correct?
The 10 pounders....the one girl is on her diet & I am TRYING to get her down
to 2 ounces of meat per day but it's not going well......so should she get
1/2 ounce liver & 1/2 oz organs per week?
The reason I ask is because I will weigh it out & show everyone the "average
amount" needed.....so it can be eyeballed later but for now they've no
concept of the amounts, the guessing game is failing.
I couldn't figure out why the big kids weren't always showing interest in
their dinners & I was getting worried, Whisper didn't want to eat much & she
has major health issues that keep me on my toes.... My husband feeds long
before I am awake in the mornings & usually at night when I am at work...
Last night I noticed the 8 month old's waste line a wee bit plumper than I
like! I saw a bowl in the fridge since he didn't want to eat dinner. It
was HUGE!!!!!! Now, if it were a one meal a day feeding, MAYBE but now I
saw why they were looking so... err.... Healthy! & why the pounds of food
were disappearing so fast :-) They are pups, giant breeds & NEED to be
thin.... I had to explain this again to my husband...he just doesn't like
those really thin "wastelines" but he's getting there! It's hard to show
people what a waistline should look like compared the the 'average' looking
dog which is more "lab" looking (Hope that meakes sense....)
So I figure they should get about 4 pounds a day max so that averaged out to
about 1 lb organs & one pound liver per week, right?

My husband LOVES to feed the dogs so I just want to be sure he gets it down
the best as possible to make it more healthy & enjoyable for all!

We now have ALL 9 on raw, wahoo! & room for one more ;-)

If your dog gets 2ounce total intake for daily,then,10% of that 2 ounce will be organ intake.
So,out of that 10% intake,5 % is liver,the other 5% is kidney or other organ.My dog gets 0.5 ounce of liver and 0.5 ounce of kidney being fed 10 ounce total in average.
I do not weigh organ to be accurate but I know if amount is way too much or not just looking at it.

My dog is 34lb.

I am trying to let her loose weight to about 30lb-32lb.

My husband is little weak by palette begging and I must make sure he would not give piece of bread etc and I say no to him.

Hi, Tracy!
You've gotten some great advice!
Just a summary; donate that kibble to a shelter!
Ditch the yogurt and vit C., wasting $$ there.
Raw feeding will make his skeletal structure and immune system stronger!
Feeding liver every day may be too much, try to keep it to 3-5% of his total
intake.
Buy whole chickens and turkeys, this boy needs Bigger Food!
Poultry necks are mostly too small for a giant breed, unless they're
attached to the bird.
Add pork shoulders and fresh hams and beef heart to his diet soon.
Include 5-7% other organs in his diet, too. kidney, spleen, sweetbreads,
etc. (thymus, pancreas)

I'll leave what to tell your husband to you, just so you remind him that you
ARE SWMBO! ^_^

Well that's prefab, just Simon's prefab. I recall the rabbit grind
being quite bony; do you know what Simon includes in the grind, and
more importantly what he does not? If he includes heads and feet
that's more bone, if he includes all the guts that's less bone; if he
grinds chicken that's processed like Foster Farms sells it, that's
about 27% bone which may is quite a lot meal after meal.

And the other thing of course is that no matter what Simon's
proportions are, if there's too much bone for the kid, there's too
much bone.

Yeah, letting him work meat off the bone should be plenty of fun (and
fun to watch) and will certainly reduce the impact of dietary bone.
My four month kitten can do serious damage to a Cornish game hen;
even at 12 weeks when her teeth were unbelievably small she was
tackling quail halves so I'd imagine your Chi could do at least as
much.

We have just bought a new Great Dane puppy tonight and will be picking
her up in 2 days. She is 7 months old, overweight with a distended
tummy, and has been on a kibble called "Diamond". I'm wondering what
is the best way to transition her over to raw? We have 4 dogs
currently on raw and haven't had a problem, but I'm concerned about
her since she's never had anything other than kibble and her tummy
seems way to fat. Any advice would be helpful.

Becky,

Just switch her to raw when you get her home. No transition necessary.
Being overweight and having a distended stomach could merely be due to
inappropriate food/too much food...but you aren't going to know that until
you see how she does on real food.

Hey Becky,
Congratulations on your new puppy. Don't buy any kibble and don't
bring any home with her. Start her off on raw the first meal you
feed her at your house. I prefer beginning on chicken backs but you
don't really have time to get any before she comes home. They are
pretty hard to find and you will probably have to get them special
ordered. Since you won't be able to get them, use chicken leg
quarters instead.

What exactly are you feeding your other 4?

I am posting here rather than on the rawcat list in hopes that someone
may see this sooner...

We found a kitten today, and are guessing it is 4-5 weeks old. It has
teeth and was running around, but it's eyes are still very blue, and it
wants to nurse. No problem gnawing chicken off a thigh, but it keeps
looking to nurse.

We do have a kid/lamb nipple, which is fairly small and might work if
he would try it, but he isn't interested. No KMR either, at least not
until the 26th; in the meantime, we have baby formula, buttermilk,
cream, milk, and 18 month old frozen goat colostrum. I don't know what
is going to be best. So, any and all suggestions on what to do
tomorrow for him are appeciated - I would just ask that it be off list.

My 6 month old dog has been raw fed since I got him at 8 weeks. When
he came home, he had yucky puppy breath. That went away, then he had
stinky breath because he started to lose his teeth. Once they were all
replaced by his adult teeth, that stink went away too. And now we've
got a new bad breath and I'm not sure why. It smells a lot like fish.

It appeared a couple weeks ago and just won't go away. It gets really
bad when he hasn't opened his mouth in a while. There's no sign of any
decay of teeth or gums, his gums are a nice pink, his teeth are all
still pearly white and there doesn't appear to be anything stuck in
there.

I'd like to take him to the vet, but they know I feed raw and that's

So, the 3 Dane kids snubbed their noses at the fish I bought them tonight.
I was getting desperate since they haven't had fish so I bought them some
whole fish (gutted: that's all I could find)....
They snubbed their noses to their at the kidneys this morning!
So, tonight I Cooked it on high in Garlic on on each side only (left raw
inside) just coated in garlic, MMMM yummy!!!
Casper just (literally) rolled his eyes, layed down and looked at the
ceiling!! Mum says "Oh my Gosh they are acting like pouty 2-years olds"....
Then she says, "Wait, they ARE 2 years olds". They are 7, 8 & 10 months
old :-) JUST like 2 yrs old ;-)
The other two looked at me like I was bonkers!! SO! I gave them a half
hour, picked it up, put it in the fridge & will serve for breakfast...
I remember people telling me it is oK to wait it out....
As far as Whisper goes (7 mo Dane pup), I cannot let her sugar level drop so
if she won't eat in the morning, I will have to make sure she gets something
into her system...Last night she had only a turkey tail, then her medicine &
refused to eat anything after that! She is 100 lbs. She did eat her kidney
but snubbed her nose at the liver (so I cooked it in the pan with the
kidneys) same results...
Will try again at breakfast...I won't give in to the Dane boys though!
They've no excuses not to eat it ;-)

The Dal, whom I assumed would snub this and walk away! He snubbed the
kidneys! He sniffed the fish... & looked at me... I walked away, a few
moments later I returned to check on him and he had eaten the tail and was
tearing into the fish like a PRO! YAHOOO!! He also ate the kidneys after
their garlic bath! You guys are great... I ALMOST gave up after the first
weeks, I kinda felt a bit overwhelmed & unwanted here as a newbie. I was
convinced to stick it out as I read what was in dog foods & being reminded
of the tens of thousands of dollars I put into medical bills...

Hi, Trina!
No one is EVER unwanted here!

We are the 'tough love' specialists, for dogs and peeps alike! ^_^

Really, we may seem hard and unfeeling, but are just squishy marshmallows
inside! ; )

You have a lot of dogs, and many of them have problems, its easy to feel
overwhelmed at first, even with just one dog.

It takes awhile to throw off the 'programming' from all those years of pet
food corps brainwashing, I mean, advertising.

Just keep giving those fish to those Danes! Are they frozen? Bea likes
fishsicles!

She likes her kidney frozen, too, but will eat it thawed. Its less stinky
frozen, tho'.

i just wanted to say thank
you to this group for all the things i have learned from you guys and
gals. my dogs love the raw diet and are feeling better. i have a bull
terrier named bella that also is very grateful because she has been
vomiting and runny stools for a month and 4 days into raw feeding, no
more gas, no more vomiting and runns.shes like a new dog.
have a woderful christmas and a happy new year, beth and all her
bratts

15a. Couldn't help ourselves. . .walmart puppy

Well we went to do some shopping today and when we got there a lady
had a small black dog in a cart with a sign that said Free puppy for
Christmas. Noone wanted to look at her. It was like she had leprasy
or something. We'd had to cancel on the dog we were adopting for a
few reasons mostly financial in the way of unable to get him to us.
I could not help but going over to see. It turned out to be a 4
month old Mini Schnauzer x Rat Terrier. Solid black. Female. Had
shots, teeth checked (she wanted to be sure of the pup's health).
Then her husband lost his job and they no longer could keep her.
Mostly, she said because they had to be out of their home in 3 days.

Her name is Holly. Holly and Angel. We were suckers the moment we
heard it :) I looked it up. Mini Schnauzers weight 11-20lbs. Rat
Terriers 10-25. I figure the happy median is about 17lbs on a mix?
If I go off this as a start she should get how much each day raw?

I'm just not quite sure how to figure it out.

(if anyone out there owns a similar mix or either purebred let me
know of a good group to join for general breed discussion please)

I don't watch fat content.. and that even goes for when we have upset tummies
or stress. i feed the food exactly the way it comes, with the skin and fat..
That may be a "know your dog" kinda thing though. My dogs have never had a
reaction that i've noticed to more than enough fat.

When we are traveling i routinely buy pork shoulders, ribs and whole chickens
for whatever dog(s) we're traveling with.
