Hi Sherri,

This is the first time I've posted on rawfeeding, but I've been
reading the posts here daily (some may say obsessively!) since I
started feeding my 18mo weimaraner raw in February of this year.

I have Pitcairn's book, however since I became a member of this group
I haven't opened its pages once. That's not to say that it's not a
valuable reference book for dog healthcare (I actually have no idea
whether it is or isn't) but it seems that with regards to nutrition he
may be slightly off the mark compared to the many experienced raw
feeders on this list.

What strikes me about the specific queries that you have raised is this:

-agreed most of our dogs do not get the same physical exercise as
wolves in the wild, even those which have an active lifestyle, but
surely feeding something which is closer to the natural diet is better
than feeding something less close to the natural diet? Seems like a
no-brainer to me. And there are thousands of people on this list
feeding raw to their dogs who are testament to the fact that our
domestic dogs are not only capable of digesting and thriving on a prey
model diet but are designed to do so.

-surely the chemical content due to environmental contamination is
going to affect not only meat and bones, but vegetables, fruit, grains
and anything else in our current environment (even those which are
organically raised). I therefore don't see how substituting
contaminated meat and bones for contaminated veg and grains can be a
good thing?

I don't live in the US, I live in Switzerland, and although I try to
buy organic meat when I can (for both myself and my dog), the price
sometimes prohibits this. By and large it seems unlikely to me that
meat here would be much different (contamination-wise) to meat in the
US or anywhere else, as long as what you are feeding is as straight
from the animal as you can get it. As far as I'm concerned the
contamination that we need to worry about occurs when humans get their
hands on it and start processing and adding a plethora of unnecessary
additives to our food.

I wouldn't call myself an experienced raw feeder, but spend some time
reading the posts from the knowledgeable and helpful people here, take
it slowly and most of all don't panic! Switching to raw has been the
best thing that I've ever done for Lola, and once you get into the
swing it really couldn't be easier =)

Best of luck with your new pup,

Ali

Thanks to everyone so far for their input. I don't worry too much
about what I eat, since I eat so little meat. The ranchers I've found
around here grass feed their cows, free range their chickens and don't
do the hormone, antibiotic, and other crap. But then, there are
chickens in the grocery around here that are antibiotic and hormone
free. That's a good option, especially if the other is cost
prohibitive.

I'm sure I'll have more questions as December gets close and we bring
our new little guy home.

Sherri

Hi Monica,
I can only speak for myself, often not very eloquently, but i was
afraid to answer your question because i don't know the answer. I
have only been been raw feeding a couple of years, and i certainly
have no nutritional or veterinary experience. I have just recently
had the time and has it become within my comfort zone to answer
posters with newbie questions. I appreciate what the people on this
list have taught me and what that knowledge has allowed me to be able
to do to improve the life of my dogs. I post in an effort to try and
pay it back. Also, i have to tell you that i have never been known as
the sharpest knife in the drawer, but, depending on the task, a butter
knife is every bit as useful in the scheme of things. Taking all of
that into consideration if i were sitting at your kitchen table and
this wasn't a list format, i would say to you that at this point i
would stick with what raw food works for Loki. I would be afraid that
going back to kibble might cause an even worse reaction because at
this point i would think that if rich raw foods are hard for him to
digest i would worry that the kibble might really hurt him. At this
point you don't honestly know how he would fair on kibble. I would get
a second medical opinion and help with my dog. Just because your vet
is on board with raw feeding doesn't mean he is infallible. Maybe you
should try to write to Dr. Lonsdale and ask him. For sure i know i
would ask permission to contact Ginny privately and get her help on
getting Loki treated with a good homeopath. My dogs are young and
very healthy right now, but if i were to have any trouble at all, and
no i don't personally know Ginny nor do we chat on the phone, i would
ask her for help. I am sorry i didn't answer you on the first post,
but i don't think this list could function efficiently if everyone
offered posts that were really and truthfully just an opinion and
nothing more than that. I apologize for any part i might have played
in your feeling abandoned by this list and will rethink my posts to
make sure they don't sound condescending, KathyM
