LOL....WoW!! I hope my vet doesn't act like that when I tell him about my switch.....=]

I went to my usual vet with no appt. because my dog was limping.
My vet was busy at the time and asked if I'd mind if one of his
colleagues could take a look, I said no problem. He has never asked me
what I feed. The other doctor started feeling my dog for sprains
and/or twists. She then asked my what I fed him. I told her he is on a
raw diet. As soon as I said that she started huffing and
puffing(literally)
to a point that she was breathing hard, I acually thought she was
going to have a heart attack in front of me. She steeped out of the
room to get a glass of water and came back giving me the whole shpiel
on a balanced diet, the extreme need for carbs and of course
salmonella bacterias. She said get a "good" puppy chow and cook the
meat and feed both. I told her I will do that just for fear that if I
didn't say that I'll probably kill her. Of course I'll never ever go
back to garbage food. I left the room and could not contain my
laughter. I'm still laughing.

<<<<<< I bet you are using the term "almost choked" using human terms of
choking. It is pretty common for a dog to swallow something,
realize it's too big and bring it back up to chew a little more
before swallowing again. This CAN be interpeted as choking when he
is bringing it back up. Dog's don't chew in the same manner as
humans. >>>>>>

Nope. I know what that looks like (above) and he's done that too. At first
it scared me, but I see it's just something they do from time to time.

The incidents I referred to was his swallowing a huge chunk of soft meat and
freezing in his tracks, not being able to breathe, and looking panicked.
One time he got it down. The other he coughed it up (as I was lifting him to
run to the ER). Then I started cutting.

I'll try what you suggest, though. Maybe he CAN tear if he's invested
enough??

Thanks for the responses.
Carol

3. NEED ADVICE - BOWEL DISTRESS

Hello...

I'm relatively new to raw...converted both my wheatens about 2 weeks
ago and they have been loving it. Up until yesterday things were
going very well and without incident....but around 4 ish yesterday my
1 year old wheaten girl, Molly, had diarrhea squirts in the house. A
few minutes later she began throwing up. This went on and off
throughout the rest of the evening and night. I keep her crated at
night in my bedroom and woke up several times during the night to her
whining--her signal she had to go out. Everytime I took her out she
squatted to go and liquid drops came out. She also threw up a few
times again as well.

I'm worried because in the year I've had her she has never gone this
long consistently vomiting and having diarrhea. Not sure if this is
a food adjustment thing...or maybe she has a virus. My other
wheaten, Riley, has been eating the same things as Molly and he has
not reacted this way. I thought maybe I could post what I've been
feeding over the last couple of weeks and get your feedback as to
whether it is diet related. I have given them the following meals,
all weighing between 8 and 9 oz (my wheatens are 30 lbs and on the
thin side)...

**boneless chicken breast, two chicken kidneys, one chicken drumstick

**turkey breast with skin & some bone, egg with some crushed shell,
and small turkey liver

**beef chunks with about 1 oz of been liver (no bone in this meal)

The meal Molly at yesterday morning was the beef meal. I have fed
that once before without incident. All meats are either organic or
naturally raised.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. If this is some stomach
virus she has picked up, fine. I just don't want to subject her to
this if I am causing it with diet. She is looking pretty miserable.

Thx,

Nancy

4. BOWEL DISTRESS - ONE MORE QUESTION

Sorry...forget one more thing. What do I feed a dog who is vomiting
with diarrhea? I did not feed her this morning, but am unsure when the
time comes how to reintroduce her to food without upsetting her system
any more. Do I feed meat only? Do I feed less? In the old days the
vet always told me to give boiled rice and boiled ground beef....but
obviously this isn't an option anymore.

Thx...

Nancy
