Well no, I live in Sacramento. But I suspect our opportunities are not
so different. However, since you are buying prefab stuff and I do not,
perhaps that's what gives me the advantage.

I shop chain supermarkets and ethnic markets. I buy from a wholesaler,
I buy from a several California-based online sources, I buy through a
buying group. I'm certain the same options are available to you.

Not everything I buy is under a buck but enough is--or is close enough--
to allow for some spendy shopping in the $1.50 range. Just as a good
raw diet is evaluated over time, so is my budget.

Hi Diana,

I'm not Chris...don't live in San Diego or even California for that matter!!
:) I do live in the middle of nowhere without access to the opportunities
found in a metropolitan area (lower prices, buying groups, etc) but very
seldom do I buy anything for over $1/lb. A few weeks ago chickens were on
sale at Safeway...bought three cases for .79/lb. This week pork shoulder
blade roasts were on sale for .99/lb...bought 3 cases!! You just have to
watch ads and shop around. I would think you would have far more
availability for finding good deals than I do. I know there is a co-op or
buying group in that area.

Thanks Sandee. I do that also but is very rare to find those prices here and since my baby has to eat I just buy what is available even if I have to pay more sometimes, thank goodness my budget doesn't suffer :) I'ts very expensive to live in San Diego unfortunately :(

3. Please, I really need your help

Hiya,

I wrote in before, but I think my email got missed, and I really need this help before I can put my guys on a raw diet.

Can some of you please list what cuts I am supposed to be asking for from a butcher or a farm?

All I know if that the legs in cows are too tough for them to chew through and they are only recreational bones. Other than ribs, I don't know any other bone-in cuts.

I am able to get chicken, beef, elk, and buffalo(bison) --- I just don't know what to request in a packing order.

Please help because I don't want to waste all my money buying inappropriate meats and have my dogs suffer for my mistakes. (I am on a limited budget so just can't afford to make big mistakes)

I put my original email below (trimmed) so you can see what kind of dogs I have etc.

Thanks,
Anna

-------------------
I have a 2 year old Chihuahua who is currently on kibble and she's getting chicken wings to start off with... she seems to have taken to that quite easily.

I also have a 6 month old Weimaraner that is on Fromm kibble and also started on raw pheasant patties and chicken wings and thighs. She has urinary tract issues that the vet is unsure about and so she put her on antibiotics for an entire month... :(

Can someone tell me specifically what cuts I am supposed to be looking for (in regards to the larger dog)? I can get beef from the butcher but I need to know what to ask for. I can also get elk and buffalo and chicken easily. I buy tripe in a can.

Also, when one buys chicken backs for the dogs are they supposed to look meaty? I looked at some that they were selling for soups but they just looked like bones to me.

So that's my first bunch of questions.. I am pretty sure I know how much to feed it's just the buying of meats that I am unsure of. So a list of meat/bone cuts and the names of recreational bones only....and the things that a butcher/farm might have available but that isn't typical sold for human consumption but is great for dogs.

> Oh, and btw, why is feeding raw messy?

I guess it's partly because I have to handle raw chicken twice a day
(this from a just recently departed vegetarian and semi germ phobe)-
juices on the counter, etc, etc. I've been feeding her outside because
she drags the chicken all around - eats different pieces in different
locations. I guess I could feed her inside, in the laundry room, for
example, but I worry about her getting raw meat on surfaces that
crawling baby hands could get at it. Even the outside makes me a
little nervous. I'm curious what other people do to solve concerns
about raw meat and babies in the same vicinity. Advice?

> Btw Melanie, where did you get such a big chicken?

Trader Joes! The greatest market of all time!

Melanie

I would not take any research findings seriously where the people
financing and conducting the research (Azmira) stand to gain
financially from positive research findings. Azmira conducted research
that found that animals ingesting a diet including Azmira
products "faired the best" (they can't even spell). This is a
marketing ploy disguised as "research".
