[rawfeeding] Raw feeding and shedding??
I'm new to raw feeding and switched my dogs about a month ago, just as they were coming out of blowing coat. I have a German Shepherd, 2 Belgian Malinois, and a (neutered) Chow/Golden mix (who looks like a smaller golden w/a golden-type coat). The GSD and Mali's are still shedding profusely which is especially not typical of the Mali's. I was wondering if the new food is contributing to this. Our club director (we train in protection sports) said it was because of the switch.
He also said that Mali's have a hard time with raw feeding when it comes to maintaining weight, which I have definitely found to be the case. My girl initially lost 5 lbs (she's only 45 - 47 lbs on a good day) and has had a really hard time getting it back/maintaining it. What would I be able to give my Mali's that would be maybe higher in fat/protein content so I could get them to keep weight on? My GSD and mix have no prob on 1lb of food a day (both are around 50lbs), but my mali's are eating 2 - 3lbs a day. Everyone fasts on Sunday, except my female Mal ('cause she so freaking skinny).
As for what we've been feeding, chicken is fed the most often, since I can get that the most readily/affordably, but we have had a week of pork (the bones in the pork didn't digest to well with my mali), and a couple days of beef. I have a hard time finding beef with adequate bones. Once a week, they get organ meet (matching the protein source they'd been fed that week), with an egg mixed in (including the shell). Once a week they get fish with egg.
Thanks in advance for any help! I've really enjoyed lurking and learning on this e-mail group (been a member for a couple months now). :)
Smiles,
Nicole
