Jeni,
well it looks like everyone did a good job of answering your
questions. But another reason to feed such large meals is that a large
fraction of the overall meal gets digested because when the dog's
stomach fills all of the enzymes can touch more of the food. The
stomach flattens and folds, and with large meals all the folds stretch
out. This also actually fills up the dog's stomach as opposed to small
meals.
