[rawfeeding] Another convert to raw feeding

We started our eight-year-old Dalmatian, Spike, on a raw diet about
two weeks ago now, after a lot of encouragement from people on this
forum. Funny thing: Although we wrestled with how and whether to do
it for weeks, when we finally decided to go raw it was no big deal.

I bought a couple of whole chickens to start with and thought I'd
start Spike out with a chicken neck, to see how he reacted to raw
chicken. He sniffed at it and walked away and for a second I wondered
if a dog who had eaten kibble for eight years was going to go for raw
food. Spike turned around and began to lick at the chicken neck, and
then picked it up and carried it out to what has become his eating
spot in a sunny part of the yard. He has always been a pretty dainty
eater for a dog and I was encouraged to see him chew the chicken neck
quite a bit as he ate it.

A leg quarter was the next step, and it was certainly the biggest
piece of food we'd ever fed Spike. He chewed and gnawed and slobbered
for probably 20 minutes as he ate it, but definitely didn't have any
trouble. I checked his mouth and gums for any cuts or sore spots and
was surprised not to find any. Spike polished off the liver and
gizzards and such, again chewing them more than I might have expected.

Since then we've fed Spike some pork neck bones, beef liver, and some
flank steak that was on sale. Oh, and a chunk of raw hamburger, Spike
has always enjoyed that. He loved the neck bones, which were really
meaty. I fed him one raw egg, which he slurped up somewhat
reluctantly after I cracked the shell for him.

The only real change we've noticed in Spike is that his droppings have
become chalky and insubstantial, in stark contrast to the brown
clay-like piles of the past. Funny, as dog doo goes it really is a
lot less disgusting!

Thanks to everyone who offered us advice and support. Sometime we'll
report in with a collection of absurd things people have said to us
about raw feeding!

Take care,
